‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ was the first movie of MCU’s phase 5 and was bound to kickstart great things, primarily Kang the Conqueror, Marvel’s next big cinematic villain. The movie turned out to be a great disappointment both when it comes to advancing the MCU story and when it comes to profits.

The subsequent drama with Jonathan Majors certainly did not help. The recent industry reports claim however that Kang would be replaced due to poor reception even if the actor didn’t get himself into legal trouble.

The first reported numbers for the movie were clear. ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ earned a total of $476.1 million worldwide. This includes $214.5 million from the United States and Canada and $261.6 million from other countries.

Although it had a big opening weekend, making $120.4 million over four days, it fell short of breaking even, which was estimated at $600 million. The movie had a production budget of $388.4 million.

In its second weekend, it saw a major drop, earning only $32 million, which was the largest decline for any Marvel film in its second week (at that point). The film performed well internationally, with the highest earnings coming from China, the UK, and Mexico, which is often in cases such as these, and it’s currently happening with ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ – it’s a huge flop domestically but a great hit internationally.

Now latest Forbes analysis concluded that the movie did manage to earn a small profit. ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ lost money at the box office, however, it still managed to make a profit due to a few key factors.

First, the UK government offers a cash reimbursement of up to 25.5% for money spent on filming in the country. Because ‘Quantumania’ was made in the UK, it received about $58.3 million back from the government. This reduced the movie’s effective cost to around $330.1 million.

Additionally, the money made from ticket sales, merchandise, and home entertainment goes directly to Disney, the studio that made the film, not the production company responsible for the movie’s expenses.

This means that while the movie didn’t perform well in theaters, the overall profits from merchandise and other sales could still cover its costs and lead to a profit.

Taking all of these factors into account, it’s estimated that the movie earned around $88K. Yes, it does seem like spare change, but it really isn’t. The media company managed to regain its losses and turn some profit – which is always a win when it comes to Hollywood accounting.

Nevertheless, counting on government reimbursements is not a viable strategy in the long run this is why Ant-Man’s future in the MCU is uncertain. Several months ago it was reported that the fourth planned movie was permanently on hold following the disastrous results of the ‘Quantumania.’
