‘Agatha All Along’ premiered shortly after ‘The Acolyte.’ The Star Wars show bombed incredibly hard mostly due to factors related to the quality of the show, but it has also seen a significant backlash due to its DEI themes.
Many in the MCU fandom expected ‘Agatha All Along’ to follow the same path. MCU has been struggling for a while at this point and ‘Agatha All Along’ seemed like it has all the ingredients for the latest review-bombing campaign.
Think about it. The show focuses on a Z-list character that no one particularly cares about, it’s about magic and witchcraft with an almost exclusively female cast. The only male actor on the show is a somewhat flamboyant gay man.
The backlash however didn’t happen. There were some attempts to review-bomb the show, mostly on IMDb but it seemed like not even the haters cared about ‘Agatha All Along’ enough to bother review-bombing it.
The viewership numbers however showed something altogether different.
‘Agatha All Along’ hit 9.3 million views on Disney+ in its first seven days of streaming. This is lower than ‘The Acolyte’ but Marvel Exec Brad Winderbaum revealed something interesting, ‘Agatha All Along’ had the highest continuation rate out of all MCU shows so far.
This means that it had the highest number of returning viewers week after week. This is a good metric because it shows that the show attracted fans and managed to keep them. Last week Nielsen ratings served us with a shock. ‘Agatha All Along’ managed to place on the 8th spot when it comes to the “originals” chart.
Max’s ‘The Penguin’ which is so far lauded as the best superhero show of all time did not even earn a placement (might be due to other factors such as the fact that it released only one episode.)
Now following an amazing and aesthetically beautiful episode 7, Deadline reports that the show managed to garner an amazing 4.2 million viewers after a single day which is up 35% from the premiere episode’s performance!
This shows that ‘Agatha All Along’ is not the most straightforward hit that MCU ever had – like ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ but it is a hit nonetheless at least when it comes to targeted demographics.
The best part is, ‘Agatha All Along’ also is the cheapest MCU production to date. The show mostly relies on practical effects, so the threshold to be “profitable” is much much lower. Especially when compared to the likes of ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Secret Invasion.’
‘Agatha All Along’ still has 2 more episodes to release, and I have no doubt that those episodes will break records as well.
