‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is MCU’s most recent hit. The movie brought Reynolds’ Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine to the cinematic universe, along with a plethora of Marvel’s legacy characters from past movie franchises.

Needles to say, the movie was always bound to be a success, especially with that level of fan service. It earned more than a billion dollars at the box office, and will certainly generate significant revenue through merch. We know that the bottom line is important, and in the age when Disney is struggling with superhero flops, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was bound to lead to a sequel, or at least, some significant appearances for the characters.

Shortly after the release of the movie, various theories and rumors started spreading that a fourth movie is in early development, or that Deadpool and Wolverine will make an appearance in ‘Secret Wars.’

Recently, the mind behind Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds talked about the character’s future with Andrew Garfield as a part of Variety’s “Actors to Actors’ and answered a few questions.

Reynolds revealed something we’ve already known really, that Deadpool works only if he is not over-utilized and if his appearance is surprising. This sort of dashes any hopes that we are going to see a sequel or character’s big appearance any time soon.

REYNOLDS: I don’t know. Honestly, my feeling is that the character works very well in two ways. One is scarcity and surprise. So it had been six years since the last one, and part of the reason is that it swallows my whole life. I have four kids, and I don’t ever want to be an absentee [dad].

I kind of die inside when I see their faces and they do a sports thing or something and I missed it. I don’t know what the future of “Deadpool” will be, but I do know that we made the movie to be a complete experience instead of a commercial for another one.

Reynolds already talked about how work on Deadpool movies affects his personal life, in fact, it was the first thing he mentioned when he was asked about the sequel during the ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ premiere.

Reynolds explained that making a ‘Deadpool’ movie is a huge commitment, from development to promotion, and balancing it with his family life is important to him. He doesn’t want to miss moments with his four kids and wife, so he’s unsure about the future of Deadpool.

He also shared that sometimes it’s important for a movie to simply stand on its own. He sees Deadpool more as a supporting character than the main focus, and while the story sometimes centers on him, it’s only possible if he’s positioned as the underdog. He feels he may not be able to repeat that approach again.

It’s important sometimes to make space for a movie to just be a movie. The other thing is, I see Deadpool as a supporting much more than he is a main [character], the center. We center him sometimes because that’s what they want, but you can’t center him unless you take everything away from him. You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog, and I don’t think I can do that again.

So I think if he comes back, it’s going to be in someone else’s movie. Channing Tatum was so excited to play Gambit [in Deadpool & Wolverine], and I would happily be the fifth banana in his movie or anyone else’s.

I’m sure that Tatum will be glad to hear this, as the actor has spent the last few months lobbying for his own MCU installment, or at least, a permanent role as a part of the new X-Men lineup.
