Despite mixed reactions from some fans, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has proven to be a popular series on Amazon. The second season premiered on August 29, 2024, with three episodes, and it will be interesting to see how things unfold, especially in light of the recent announcements from the showrunners that we’ve covered.

While initial reports suggested a drop in viewership that pleased some critics, there is good news for true The Lord of the Rings fans: Amazon has confirmed that the show’s second season is experiencing a steady increase in viewership.

This update follows concerns that the series might not be renewed for a third season due to declining numbers, but the production company’s confirmation of its strong performance offers hope to fans eager for more of the series.

According to our earlier report, the incomplete and preliminary figures from Samba TV indicated that 902,000 households tuned in for the premiere of The Rings of Power Season 2. This marks a notable decline compared to the viewership for the first season:

While the initial numbers may have caused concern among fans, it appears the situation is not as dire as they might suggest. We’re pleased to share that new figures from Amazon, which should be considered official for the current season, paint a more positive picture.

In an internal memo from Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, it was revealed that The Rings of Power Season 2 is performing significantly better than the initial figures indicated. The series has drawn 40 million viewers in just 11 days, averaging around 3.6 million viewers per day, which is notably higher than the Samba TV numbers suggested.

Additionally, Salke confirmed that millions tuned in to watch the first season in August, likely in preparation for the new season, as we previously reported. The memo also included the following details:

We’ve seen an impressive amount of our Rings of Power customers coming from outside of the U.S., which is a testament to the show’s resonance with global audiences and the remarkable growth of Prime Video customers worldwide.

Additionally, Salke has confirmed that The Rings of Power Season 2 is currently the No. 1 show on Prime Video globally and ranks among the streamer’s Top 5 TV seasons of all time based on total viewership over the past 11 days. This is certainly encouraging news. Given this, fans can be reassured that The Rings of Power Season 2 appears to be on a positive trajectory, similar to House of the Dragon Season 2, which also had a slow start but eventually gained momentum and became a hit.

It’s common for shows to experience a drop in viewership between seasons, particularly with a significant gap between them. However, it seems The Rings of Power Season 2 is well on its way to success!
