Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Might Be Recast Following ‘Secret Wars’ According to Recent Reports

The news dropped a few weeks ago that Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom in the MCU. The reactions have been mixed primarily due to some fans feeling that Marvel Studios is jeopardizing Iron Man’s legacy due to casting RDJ as Doom. The other side feels like the story won’t make much sense by repeating the actor without at least acknowledging in-universe that they are played by the same actor.

We know that RDJ started negotiating his return at least a year ago. According to several sources, Marvel is paying $80 million for Anthony and Joe Russo to direct ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ with significantly more for Robert Downey Jr. to play the villain Doctor Doom in both films.

But, the keyword here is both films, as there is no guarantee that RDJ will be back for more movies, and that was one of the things that was discussed during the most recent Cosmic Circus AMA. According to Alex Perez, the chances are huge that Doom will be recast considering the fact that this version of the character won’t be from Earth-616.

Alex: I think so, yes. Because the Earth RDJ’s Doom comes from isn’t from 616, so there’s a high chance he’ll be recast.

Fans who hated the casting will be relieved, but this means that one theory we covered in the past might prove to be correct. A new fan theory suggests that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in the MCU might not be the “real” Doctor Doom, but rather a variant who will be eliminated by the true Doom, played by a different actor. The theory argues that Marvel is carefully planning Doom’s introduction, understanding his significance as a major villain and cultural icon. According to the theory, Marvel could cast a high-profile actor (like RDJ) in a role that seems to be Doctor Doom, but is actually a decoy, used to set up future events following the events that will take place in ‘Secret Wars’ and possibly Battleworld.
