Robert Eggers Promises ‘Werwulf’ Is His Darkest Nightmare Yet

Robert Eggers, the filmmaker behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, has revealed that his upcoming project, Werwulf, is the darkest story he has ever written—“by far.

Eggers is known for his unsettling and atmospheric films, often exploring folklore, history, and psychological horror. With Werwulf, it seems he is taking things to an even darker place.

Eggers is making this new werewolf flick with Focus Features. He co-wrote the script with Sjón, his writing partner from ‘The Northman.’ Eggers will direct the film, which is set to release on Christmas Day 2026 in North America.

Focus Features recently worked with Eggers on Nosferatu, his gothic horror film starring Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, and others. ‘Werwulf’ will be produced by Eggers, Sjón, and Focus Features, with Chris and Eleanor Columbus as executive producers.

Set in medieval England, the script reportedly incorporates dialogue true to the Old English of the time period, complete with translations and annotations to immerse audiences in its gritty setting.

While Eggers originally envisioned the film in black and white, the production has since shifted to color, though it remains steeped in the filmmaker’s trademark period drama aesthetics.
