The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has become a major success on Amazon despite facing considerable criticism. The show is set to return for its second season, with eight new episodes premiering on August 29, 2024, just a few days away. Fans are eagerly anticipating how the new season will unfold, especially with recent significant updates from the showrunners.
In recent months, we’ve covered various developments related to the series, including new characters and evolving storylines. Among the exciting additions for Season 2 is Tom Bombadil, one of Tolkien’s most enigmatic characters. The role will be portrayed by the esteemed Rory Kinnear, who has shared intriguing details about his upcoming performance.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Rory Kinnear discussed Tom Bombadil and the reasons behind the long wait to bring this iconic character to the screen. He explained that the character’s unique nature necessitated a careful and considered approach from the filmmakers.
“Well, I guess with the other adaptations, I think Peter Jackson said it, it doesn’t necessarily drive the story on, particularly in the narrative of it. But in the pages and in people’s imaginations, he is this incredible character that has so much knowledge and so much sense of fun and so much life about him, as well as the whole of humanity and history and the earth. This is sort of representative of all that Earth is, and Middle-earth.”

He also noted that the series will take a different approach to the character compared to what Tolkien fans are accustomed to.
“Obviously over multi-season episodic TV, you’ve got more time to investigate those stories. In the way that [showrunners] J.D. [Payne] and Patrick [McKay] are telling the story, they’re able to create a role for him that isn’t necessarily the one that he has in the books. So whilst they’re using that character, they are using him in a different way to how Tolkien did.”
This may upset some fans, but there’s no reason to think it will be poorly done, especially with such a prominent actor in the role. Are you excited to see Tom Bombadil? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
