Russo Brothers Confirm Robert Downey Jr. Gears Up for Doctor Doom with Deep Character Prep

During SDCC, Marvel Studios announced that the Multiverse Saga will take a surprising turn, with Kang the Conqueror being replaced by Doctor Doom, a role now played by Robert Downey Jr., best known for his portrayal of Iron Man in the earlier MCU phases.

The initial reception has been mixed, with fans expressing concerns about potentially retconning Iron Man’s death or introducing a variant of him, fearing it would undermine the emotional impact of Endgame. However, Kevin Feige reassured fans that no such thing will happen, and RDJ isn’t playing a variant of Doom—he’s playing THE Doom.

While we eagerly await more details about the upcoming Avengers films, it’s speculated that Doomsday will, at least in part, adapt the Time Runs Out storyline, a prelude to Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers have kept details under wraps, but in a recent interview, they revealed that RDJ is currently deep into character preparation.

Joe Russo explained that developing the character is a very intense process. He revealed that RDJ is currently very immersed in the preparation: “He’s writing backstory, costume ideas. He just loves really rich, 3-dimensional characters & I think he sees a real opportunity here with the character.”

According to official statements we’re going to have to wait for ‘Doomsday’ to see RDJ in the role, but some reports claim that we will see a short teaser of the character in ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ bound to be released in the summer of this year.

In any case, no matter how you feel about RDJ stepping into Doom’s boots, you have to admit that RDJ really has a knack for bringing his roles to life.
