Marvel Studios recently released a new trailer for ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ the first MCU movie focusing on Sam Wilson’s Captain America. The trailer was met with mixed reactions and plenty of controversy. Some fans criticized the fact that Sam Wilson is not a supersoldier and yet he is set up to fight Red Hulk. Some fans criticized Red Hulk’s poor CGI, but most fans criticized the fact that Sabra is in the movie.

The story involving Sabra, a Jewish superhero with a Mossad background started back when the character was first announced to take part in the movie. The controversy only grew following extensive reshoots when it’s been revealed that the superhero was not removed from the movie even in the light of the recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Seeing her in the trailer only angered fans, with plenty of them threatening to boycott the movie. Fans however held out hope that Sabra’s origin would be changed, after all, her official description for the MCU states that she is a former Black Widow, now a confidante and high-ranking official of President Thaddeus Ross. The studio was then accused of erasing her Israeli origin since there is no mention of Mossad in the description.

The Wrap recently reported that this is however not true. The publisher learned via two insiders working on the project that her Israeli origin is intact. The American Jewish Committee was quick to respond to the insider information claiming that they are glad that her Jewish ancestry is not being erased to suit the current identity politics:

If true, we are glad that Marvel recognized how essential Sabra’s Israeli identity is to her character. Superheroes have enough things to worry about. Identity politics shouldn’t be one of them.

Anti-Defamation League’s Media & Entertainment Institute also commented on the reports, expressing their gratitude for Marvel not folding under the pressure:

We’re pleased to learn that Sabra will be retaining her Israeli identity in ‘Captain America, Brave New World,’ and is still being portrayed by the wonderful Israeli actress Shira Haas. Marvel Studios should be commended for not capitulating to the anti-Israel forces who wanted this character’s identity quashed, along with her backstory. We welcome the portrayal of a strong Jewish and Israeli woman on screen, and look forward to seeing how this character is developed in the film.
