Scarlet Witch’s Triumphant Return: Is She Marvel’s Next Big Icon Post-Multiverse Saga?

Scarlet Witch is undeniably one of the MCU’s most popular characters. At first, she was introduced as a villain in the ‘Avengers’ franchise, she eventually joined the team but was later consumed by her grief after losing nearly everything and turning into a villain.
Wanda’s last appearance was in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ where she served as the main antagonist. In a final act of sacrifice, the Scarlet Witch brought down a castle on top of herself and destroyed every copy of the Darkhold in existence.
Now ‘Agatha All Along,’ despite being Agatha’s standalone show, brought focus back to the Scarlet Witch. We know that the show introduced her reincarnated son back to the fold, Billy Maximoff, and presumably, he might be Wanda’s way to return to the MCU.
But why would Wanda return to the MCU in the first place? Well, it’s been rumored that the next saga of the MCU will be Mutant Saga. This is something that Feige has already teased back when ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ were released.
The mutant era in the MCU has begun, and we’re waiting for the X-Men reboot to truly kickstart the thing now that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ have introduced the concept to the MCU.
The second set of rumors claims that the MCU will, following the end of Multiverse Saga explore supernatural and magical affairs in a bit more detail. This is likely where the ill-fated ‘Blade’ reboot and the rumored ‘Midnight Sons’ project come on.
As you know, Wanda is one of the most notable representatives of magic in Marvel comics, but she also has a complicated history with mutants.
Marvel has changed Scarlet Witch’s backstory a few times. For a long time, Wanda and her brother Pietro were thought to be Magneto’s children and mutants, tying them to both X-Men and Avengers stories.
In 2014, Marvel revealed that Wanda and Pietro weren’t mutants after all. Instead, they were genetically changed by the High Evolutionary, not born as mutants, and Magneto wasn’t their father. In recent X-Men stories, mutants on Krakoa call Wanda the “Pretender” because they blame her for reducing the mutant population during the ‘House of M’ storyline.
However, she has since taken steps to make amends and rebuild trust with the mutant community but currently in the comics she is not a mutant.
This, however, doesn’t rule out one interesting theory, that the MCU might stage some kind of a reverse “M-Day” scenario in which Scarlet Witch brings mutants to the MCU. If you’re wondering why Wanda has to be the connection between mutants and the MCU, that’s beacuse she isn’t really a part of that many significant storylines related to mutants.
Or perhaps, the Scarlet Witch might turn into a big mutant villain by staging a true “M-Day” once mutants are introduced to the MCU.
Rumors claim that Marvel Studios has big plans for Scarlet Witch, including a solo movie, two more ‘WandaVision’ spinoff series, and a major role in the next ‘Avengers’ films and ‘The Mutant Saga.’ This definitely looks like they are setting her up for the next big thing – in a villain or a hero role, it remains to be seen.
