The comic book genre is still going strong, with shared universes dominating the box office. As the DCEU concludes with Aquaman 2, fans are turning their attention to the new DCU under James Gunn’s direction, promising fresh takes on iconic characters like Superman.

While details on the upcoming Superman movie remain under wraps, the excitement is already building with the release of Creature Commandos, marking the beginning of the new DCU. Sean Gunn, who will play Maxwell Lord in this universe, revealed that his portrayal will differ greatly from Pedro Pascal’s take in Wonder Woman 1984, telling The Kristian Harloff Show, “No one is gonna confuse me and Pedro.”

He emphasized that he is adding his own distinct style to the role, with a fresh approach guided by James Gunn’s direction. Although both actors portray the same character, their interpretations will have a different tone and vibe.

Despite some criticism regarding Sean Gunn’s multiple roles in the DC universe, including voicing two characters in Creature Commandos, he is no stranger to superhero films. Having appeared as Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy and served as Rocket’s stand-in, Gunn brings solid experience to the genre.

While some question his casting as Maxwell Lord, possibly due to his connection to James Gunn, his experience in superhero films is expected to offer a fresh take on the role.

Though we don’t yet know exactly how Maxwell Lord will play into the Superman storyline, especially with David Corenswet debuting as Clark Kent, the first trailer gave us a teaser, with Krypto clearly taking center stage. The film won’t hit theaters until July 11, 2025, but we can look forward to seeing how Sean Gunn’s version of Maxwell Lord contributes to the new direction of the DCU.
