Despite being one of the most popular mutants, Gambit was never exactly among the most powerful ones. Gambit can charge objects, typically playing cards, with kinetic energy, causing them to explode upon impact.
This ability allows him to turn ordinary objects into powerful explosives. But, what if Gambit got an insane power upgrade in the form of Galactus’ Power Cosmic?
Bound to be released on January 8, 2025, the new ‘What If…?’ storyline promises exactly that. ‘What if…? Galactus Transformed Gambit #!’ by Josh Trujillo, Manuel Garcia, and Ron Lim will see Gambit taking over the mantle of Galactus’ herald.
In this issue, Gambit, known as the most charismatic and capable thief on Earth, catches the attention of Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. Empowered by the Power Cosmic, Gambit becomes nearly unstoppable.
Heralds are individuals chosen by Galactus to find new planets for him to consume. They serve as his scouts, seeking out suitable worlds while also having the power to protect themselves and carry out Galactus’s will.
Some of the most famous Heralds include the Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd), Firelord, Terrax, and Nova (Richard Rider). Each Herald has unique abilities and characteristics but shares a common duty to serve Galactus and a portion of his Power Cosmic.
Gambit is not the only unusual herald that Galactus will have in ‘What If…?’ stories, as Hulk, Moon Knight, Rogue, and Ghost Spider will get the honors in the new series as well.
Due to Gambit’s recent popularity in the MCU largely thanks to his presence in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and his portrayal by Channing Tatum, fans have already started questioning whether we might see the new Herald debut in ‘What If…?’ season 3.
The chances for that are pretty slim. The descriptions for several episodes were already revealed, such as a Red Guardian episode featuring Bucky Barnes, Bill Foster, and Ranger Morales, originally intended for Season 2.
Other highlights include an anime-inspired episode titled ‘Go-Avengers: Heroes of the Gamma War,’ where the Avengers pilot mechs against Mega-Hulk monsters, an episode featuring Agatha Harkness with a musical number, and a Shang-Chi episode set in a Western theme.
Executive producer Brad Winderbaum indicated in May that work on the season is nearly complete, making it likely Marvel Studios’ next animated project and unlikely that we will see Gambit taking over the mantle of Galactus’ Herald in the upcoming – and likely final- season.
