The shocking events of the first episode of ‘Secret Invasion’ got a lot of fans picking their jaws up after dropping it sometime during the final portion of the episode. Of course, the ending of episode 1 involved Maria Hill, who we have been following since she first appeared as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. years ago. While Hill’s demise was one of the most shocking events in the first episode, some people believe she was not who she always was. So, was Maria Hill a Skrull?

Maria Hill was never a Skrull. In fact, she had been around well before the Skrulls revealed themselves during the events of ‘Captain Marvel.’ As Nick Fury’s most trusted adviser and ally, Hill was always a human being that the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. depended on the most. However, in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ Soren impersonated Hill.

It might be tragic that Maria Hill will probably never appear in the MCU again, especially because Cobie is a fan-favorite actress that many fans of fiction are familiar due to her work in ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ But it is unlikely that Hill will ever make an appearance again because her character was killed off and the only Skrull known to have impersonated her also died off-screen. Now, with that said, let’s talk more about the theory of Maria Hill being a Skrull.

Soren was disguised as Maria Hill

Appearing as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent during the events of ‘The Avengers,’ Agent Maria Hill has always been around the picture of the MCU as a background character that worked closely with Nick Fury in a lot of the different operations involving the safety of the planet.

She was a gifted operative who rose through the ranks quickly after joining the US Armed Forces during her younger years. And ever since her rise, she started working with Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. as one of the top agents in this secret organization.

In that regard, Maria Hill was rarely seen without Nick Fury around her because she was his deputy director. Hill’s talents and loyalty allowed her to earn the trust of a man who always thought not twice but four times when deciding who to trust. And that was when we saw that Hill became important enough for Fury to include her in his plans.

We know that after the ‘Avengers: Endgame events,’ Nick Fury left the planet to work on S.A.B.E.R. out in space because he wanted to find a way to counter threats like Thanos. He was affected by the fact that he could not do anything against Thanos in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and that was when he decided to work with the Skrulls and a few trusted people to establish S.A.B.E.R.

So, while that was happening, the ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ events were also happening. In this movie, Nick Fury tasked Peter Parker to resolve a matter involving the mysterious events in London. As such, Spider-Man worked with Fury and Hill the entire movie to defeat Mysterio. But the truth was that this wasn’t Nick Fury.

Later in that film, it was revealed that the Fury in ‘Far From Home’ was actually Talos. Meanwhile, Agent Maria Hill was impersonated by Talos’ wife, Soren. That’s because Fury was out in space during that time, as revealed by the post-credit scenes. Meanwhile, Maria Hill probably accompanied Fury in space before returning to the planet before the events of ‘Secret Invasion.’

In that regard, Soren was the Maria Hill that we saw in the ‘Far From Home events.’ This gave rise to the theory that Soren and Maria Hill were one and the same the entire time, especially because we know that Talos and Soren have been around the planet for decades, as revealed during the events of ‘Captain Marvel.’ As such, it is easy to understand why some people believe that Maria Hill was a Skrull the entire time.

It would make sense for Fury to have a Skrull by his side, especially because he was close to Skrulls because of his relationship with Talos and Soren back in ‘Captain Marvel.’ He and Talos have been friends for decades, and it would be understandable for Fury to hire Soren for a job alongside him because she was the wife of one of his closest friends.

And having a Skrull by his side while he was working for S.H.I.E.L.D. would make sense because Skrulls are excellent at blending in due to their powers.

The original Maria Hill was never a Skrull

But while some people would think that Maria Hill was a Skrull the entire time because the Agent Hill that we saw in ‘Far From Home’ was actually Soren, that isn’t the case. And this was proven during the events of ‘Secret Invasion.’

The first episode of ‘Secret Invasion’ allowed us to see Maria Hill during the opening scenes. She was about to help Agent Ross escape from a pursuer after he acquired sensitive information from Agent Prescod. However, when Ross died and transformed into a Skrull, Maria Hill was surprised. She also saw that the one pursuing the fake Ross was actually Talos, and that was when she said, “he was one of you.’

It was the fact that Maria Hill said that the fake Ross was one of Talos’ men is one of the reasons to believe that she was never a Skrull and that the version of Agent Hill we saw in ‘Far From Home’ was never the original version of character. Of course, there’s also the fact that Skrulls must find someone they could impersonate, as they are not known to transform into original characters that never existed. For Soren to have impersonated Hill, she needed to see the original version.

Let’s not forget that episode 1 of ‘Secret Invasion’ also revealed that Soren died before the events of the series. One of the reasons why Talos asked Fury to return to Earth was to work together to bring down the Skrull rebels that were looking to take the planet as their own, as he wanted to avenge his wife. It was revealed later in the episode that Soren died due to one of the attacks by the Skrull terrorists.

So, the fact that Soren was already dead proves that the Maria Hill in ‘Secret Invasion’ was the genuine article. And as seen in the final scenes of episode 1, Maria Hill was killed but stayed human, further proving that she was never a Skrull.
