If there’s one thing that we know about the Skrulls in ‘Secret Invasion,’ it’s that we don’t know who we can trust because it is starting to look like most of them have been working with Gravik. Of course, we did confirm that Nick Fury is married to a Skrull woman named Varra, one of the first Skrulls that came to Earth nearly three decades ago. In episode 3, Varra was acting suspiciously, especially at the end of the episode. So, is Varra working with Gravik?

It is unlikely that Varra has been working with Gravik. That’s because she seems to be more loyal to Nick Fury than she is to Gravik and the Skrulls. The reason why she may be in contact with Gravik is the fact that she was the one who introduced him to Fury back in 1997. And that’s why she may feel partly responsible for him.

Even Nick Fury doubted whether or not his wife was working with Gravik, and that’s why it is understandable for anyone to think that Varra might be working with the enemy the entire time. After all, she is still a Skrull. Nevertheless, let’s look at what we know about what Varra has been doing and her relationship with Gravik to understand whether or not she truly is working with him.

Varra and Gravik’s relationship explained

We all know that the storyline of ‘Secret Invasion’ goes all the way back to the events that transpired in 1995 when Nick Fury and Carol Danvers worked with the Skrulls to save them from the Kree during the events of ‘Captain Marvel.’ As we saw in episode 2, more Skrulls started to find their way to Earth because Talos called them to the planet to find refuge from the Kree, as he understood that Earth was protected by its heroes. And that was when we saw in 1997 that Gravik was still a young boy when he came to Earth.

Episode 2 also allowed us to see that Fury was married to a Skrull woman, who went by the name of Priscilla Fury. However, in episode 3, we learn that this woman was Varra and that she chose a new appearance in 1998. In fact, the current human disguise she is wearing is the same one she chose in 1998 when she met up with Fury in a café and impressed the spy with her new look.

However, It is important to note that Varra was the very same Skrull that introduced Gravik to Nick in 1997. She was the one that told Fury that Gravik was a talented young boy that could be useful to them because he was able to escape the destruction of Skrullos by piloting a ship all on his own.

As such, he had skills that no other Skrull his age had, which allowed him to rise up through the Skrull ranks and become a member of the Skrull Council at a young age.

The fact that Varra was the one that allowed Gravik to come to Earth, where she introduced him to Fury, suggests that she was the parental figure that Gravik didn’t have when he first came to this planet. He lost his parents during the last stand of the Skrulls. As such, when he came to Earth, it was most likely Varra who made him feel at home as a guardian or parental figure.

That is why it is possible that Varra and Gravik were quite close during their three decades on Earth. Varra could be like a mother to Gravik even after she married Nick Fury.

And that was why Fury asked Varra during the opening scene of episode 3 whether or not she was still in contact with Gravik. After all, someone like Gravik might be quite secretive in what he does and would only choose to contact a select group of people outside of their compound in Russia. So, if Gravik and Varra kept their communication lines open, they would be quite close even though the latter is married to Fury.

Could Varra have betrayed Nick Fury?

Of course, we know that Varra fell in love with Nick Fury and married him. This isn’t even something that they just did out of false pretense. In fact, they were actually in love.

Fury was truly in love with Varra, and we can say the same about Varra because she said in episode 3 that she mourned the loss of her husband when Fury disappeared in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ after Thanos snapped half of the universe’s population out of existence.

In that regard, Varra does love Fury despite the differences in their species. But what we know about Varra is that she is also close to Gravik, who she probably kept watch over as her ward ever since he arrived on Earth as a young boy. That would mean it might not be beyond her to betray Nick Fury to work with Gravik.

But if you look at the trailer of ‘Secret Invasion,’ there is a quick scene wherein G’iah was working with a woman resembling Varra. We couldn’t see the woman’s face because she had her back turned. But her hair and skin complexion are very similar to Varra’s.

Because we know that G’iah is working with Fury and Talos and is against what Gravik has been doing, that would mean that Varra might also be working with the good guys instead of Gravik and the Skrulls. That is, of course, if the person in the trailer was actually Varra.

From what we’ve seen so far in the storyline of ‘Secret Invasion,’ the older Skrulls that have been on the planet for a longer time tend to have more pacifistic personalities compared to the younger and more idealistic Skrulls that sided with Gravik. Of course, because Varra has been on the planet for around three decades already and has seen with her eyes what humanity was capable of, it is possible that she chose to side with her husband, similar to how Talos chose to side with his best friend.
