It’s been a while since Disney+ released the latest series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law aired finished its airing last October, and the next series — Secret Invasion — is set to premiere on Disney+ this June! Samuel L. Jackson returns to the MCU as Nick Fury, and this will be the first project for him in the main role.
The series will see the return of Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. Newcomers to the franchise in this series are Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as G’iah, The Crown star Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik.
Marvel Studios revealed Secret Invasion’s first teaser trailer last year, and now they offered us the full official trailer, which gives us the impression that the MCU is ready to go back to the spy genre. We still remember 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which had that same vibe, and that movie remained one of the best MCU movies ever for the fans. Let’s hope this could mean that with Secret Invasion, we might get one of the best Marvel shows ever.
If you haven’t seen the trailer already, you can watch it down below. In the following paragraphs, we’ll break it down to see what can we expect from one of the most-anticipated Disney+ projects to date.
‘Secret Invasion’ Trailer Breakdown
Nick Fury returns to Earth
The last time we saw Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was in the post-credit scene of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. The scene revealed how Nick Fury and Maria Hill in that whole movie were actually Talos and his wife Soren, who impersonated them on Earth while Nick Fury was on vacation at the Skrulls spaceship. Now, Nick Fury returns and learns from Talos that things on Earth are far from ideal.
A group of rebel Skrulls, led by the one called Gravik, have infiltrated Earth, believing that Earth’s resources are what they need to help their kind. The trailer showed us how Fury would eventually become the most wanted man on Earth, and our money is that we can thank Sonya Falsworth for that.
Olivia Colman debuts as Sonya Falsworth
One of the best British actresses nowadays, the Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, joins the biggest shared universe in history as Sonya Olivia Colman debuts as Sonya Falsworth. The character is described as a high-ranked MI6 agent and Nick Fury’s old ally. Her goal in the series is to protect England’s national interests during the infiltration of rebel Skrulls.
Her character is pretty interesting because although she and Fury have a history, it’s been teased that she could be an antagonist at some point. We can already see how she won’t like that Fury has a friendship with Talos, the Skrull.
It seems that Talos will need to choose between his friends and his own kind
Wow, the title of this paragraph sounds like Talos joined the Avatar franchise. Okay, jokes aside now. The Skrulls were introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Although the movie has set them up as villains, the twist showed that Talos was the leader of peaceful refugees who lost their homes after the destruction of the planet Skrullos in the Kree-Skrull war.
Talos eventually joined forces with Nick Fury and Captain Marvel, who helped them fight the Kree and find a new place to live. Now, a group of rebel Skrulls is infiltrating the Earth with no good intentions, and Talos will find himself in the middle of a war against his own kind and humans.
Cobie Smulders’ return and Emilia Clarke’s debut
The post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home showed us where the real Nick Fury was while Talos was impersonating him on Earth. It also showed us how Talos’ wife Soren impersonated Maria Hill, but where’s the real Maria Hill then? This series might answer that question as Cobie Smulders returns to the franchise in the role she’s been playing for 11 years now. Her role in this series wasn’t specified in the trailer, but it gave us a good look at her, and we’re definitely excited to see Maria Hill again.
While Cobie Smulders is a returning MCU veteran, Game of Thrones and Me Before You star Emilia Clarke joins the franchise as G’iah, Talos’ daughter. We met that character in the Captain Marvel movie when she was just an innocent child since the movie took place in 1995. But now, G’iah is a grown-up, and she’s ready to join the action. We don’t know exactly what her role in the series will be, but we have a good feeling she’ll be one of those “good” Skrulls because the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree (we hope so, at least).
Why does it feel like we’re watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier again?
One thing that makes fans excited about this series isn’t only the fact that it’s based on one of the most known comic books that Marvel Comics has ever published. It is also because it feels like that “good old MCU” that we really miss. Not trying to speak ill of the other MCU projects, but some fans are claiming that the MCU started overusing humor in some of its projects. Many fans agree that this series gives a vibe of 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, not only because that movie and this series share basically the same genre but also because it deals with the problem of hostile infiltration.
We remember how HYDRA managed to infiltrate SHIELD, and now the rebel Skrulls are infiltrating the Earth. That’s a really promising concept. One more thing, even though this series features the storyline of aliens invading the Earth, what sets this series apart from other MCU projects in this Multiverse Saga is that the trailer promises us great but still grounded and realistic action sequences. Just like those in, you guessed it right, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Let’s hope we’re right about this.
Created by Kyle Bradstreet, Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ on June 21, 2023. The series will consist of six episodes.
