The first episode of ‘Secret Invasion‘ brought us the first look into a highly-anticipated conflict between Skrulls and humans. Skrulls are tired of waiting for their own home planet, something that Captain Marvel and Fury promised them until they seemingly fell from the face of the Earth. Now with tensions rising high, Fury is back on Earth and is ready to resolve the conflict, but it turns out that he is not ready nor prepared to take on such a difficult task as he was easily distracted by none other than a girl with a rainbow ball. Speaking of the girl, let’s analyze her in a bit more detail. Who was she, and what was her purpose?
The girl with a rainbow ball turned out to be Gravik. The ‘girl’ form was used to draw Fury’s attention, then the girl proceeded to shapeshift into a grown man and then into a grown woman, until eventually revealing that it was Gravik the whole time when he assumed his long-term human form. The girl was used as a distraction, and Fury failed to apprehend Gravik on time and stop the bombs from being detonated.
Now that we’ve covered who the girl with the rainbow ball is, it’s time to analyze it in a bit more detail. If you’re interested in more, stay with us and keep reading!
Skrulls are notable shapeshifters
All the scenes set at Vossoyedineniye Square proved how unprepared Fury was to deal with Skrulls. He was convinced that he knew everything about them, but he failed to recognize on time what kind of danger their shapeshifting abilities were.
As we’ve seen, Skrulls are able to take on any form in record time. At the New Skrullos, we’ve also been given a glimpse into fracking pods that Skrulls use to absorb human memories and knowledge as well, so their transformations are not surface-deep as was previously thought.
Gravik and the rest of the rebel Skrulls are aware of this enormous advantage, and they decide to use this during the Reunion celebration to the fullest.
The longer the Skrulls use a single human form, the better they become at “playing” that human, and it is more difficult to discern whether they are truly Skrulls or not. This is why, for the majority of the series, all Skrulls keep a single human form, but if it’s needed, they can shapeshift at a moment’s notice and still be indiscernible from regular humans.
Something that Fury learned the hard way.
Gravik assumed the form of a little girl with rainbow ball
Fury was tracking his targets when his attention was drawn to a small girl with a rainbow ball. She appeared to be Russian, celebrating the festivities like the majority of the people at the square at that time.
Even though the girl was obviously a decoy, a bait, and her weird behavior and fixation on Fury were obvious, Fury was slow to react to danger since he couldn’t tell whether she was 100 % Skrull.
The girl with the rainbow ball proceeded to shapeshift into a grown man, which confused Fury even more.
Then, she shape-shifted into a grown woman as soon as she had a chance.
Fury finally realized what he was dealing with when the woman shapeshifted for the last time and returned to her long-term human form, which was Gravik.
Gravik then proceeded to detonate the bomb, and chaos ensued. After the bombs went off, Gravik shot and killed Maria Hill while assuming Fury’s form.
This was the moment that Fury realized that he messed up.
Skrulls have been infiltrating human society for a long time now
Skrulls have been living among humans for close to 30 years now, and they’ve learned how to adapt at a moment’s notice. The scene with the little girl only proved how unprepared Fury was to deal with the danger.
Skrulls are highly dangerous because most people won’t attack a child, trained operatives like Fury even more so. The fact that he was unaware of how powerful this ability truly is and failed to react on time only proves how deadly the rest of the series will be. It seemed as if the square celebration was the first time that Fury noticed that he could be surrounded by Skrulls without even realizing it.
The girl was the perfect bait for Fury, and Gravik used his chance to the fullest. There was something fishy about her from the first moment she appeared on-screen, and Fury realized it too but failed to react on time.
