Shaw Levy Discusses His Upcoming Star Wars Movie: “I don’t want to do a Star Wars film that is redundant to others”

Shawn Levy is currently riding the waves of his incredible success with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which is surpassing expectations and is set to be the second-most successful Disney movie this year.

The movie is shattering box-office records, and due to this monumental success following a few bad projects, we have no doubt that he will return to the MCU again. But before he can take on an MCU project, we know that Levy has signed up to direct a Star Wars movie – also one more franchise that desperately needs success – if you’re asking the fan base in general.

Not much is known about Levy’s Star Wars movie, but by the looks of it, it’s going to be a standalone. Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film will be a standalone story featuring new characters and exploring fresh themes within the galaxy. Collaborating with screenwriter Jonathan Tropper, Levy has secured approval from Disney and LucasFilm. Although plot details are under wraps, the film will emphasize themes of the Force, connection, and individual power in the Star Wars universe.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz, Levy did reveal some details. The director doesn’t want to revisit the timelines that have been done to death and doesn’t want to make a movie that’s redundant to others:

I’ll say that the experience of crafting [Deadpool & Wolverine] has forced me to think about that question. Because there’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it’s really forced me because I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie.

While Levy probably doesn’t have too much to reveal at this point he did hint at some overall themes of the movie:

I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that’s Star Wars to me.

Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie is part of a larger slate of new projects. The next addition to the franchise is the Disney+ series ‘Skeleton Crew,’ which is reportedly facing some internal problems. When it comes to movies, Jon Favreau is transitioning from episodic television to continue ‘The Mandalorian’ story with a new movie, while James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy are also set to direct new Star Wars films. No official release date has been announced for Levy’s movie.

Levy also revealed that the movie is currently in the developmental stage:

Jonathan Tropper is writing my Star Wars film. We did The Adam Project together, and we have an idea that is really exciting to us and exciting to Kathy Kennedy and Dave Filoni. One never knows if development reaches the starting gate, but my hope is that it will.
