Shawn Levy Was Surprised How Henry Cavill Accepted the Role in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Deadpool & Wolverine’ was released over a week ago, and the movie is so far, a hit on all imaginable fronts. It’s been received really well by audiences and it’s lining up box-office records, with a potential to become Disney’s most profitable movie this year.

Much of that success is owed to the return of Marvel legacy characters from previous franchises that existed long before MCU was a thing, and of course, due to numerous references to Deadpool and Wolverine variants.

One of the Wolverine variants that appears in the movie is portrayed by Henry Cavill. In the movie, you can’t really see that it’s Cavill you can only see buff Wolverine hanging around a motorcycle. It wasn’t until Ryan Reynolds uttered a reference to the actor’s failed DCEU career that the fans figured out that it was Cavill. Well, it was that reference and the fact that Cavill has turned around toward the camera.

In any case, it’s been heavily rumored that Cavill would be playing Wolverine in the movie for several months before the movie premiered, so fans were not exactly shocked by his appearance. But as Deadpool put it “it just feels right.”

Levy recently discussed that Cavill did not need a lot of negotiations to appear in the movie. Speaking to Variety the director revealed that Cavill said “yes” right away:

If we’re going to talk about him, we must call him by his actual credited name, the Cavillerine, which Ryan coined. I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term. He said “yes” right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful. It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he’s appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.

But it wasn’t all fun and games, however, despite Cavill having a ton of fun on set he was reportedly sick to his stomach by inhaling a cigar smoke for 8 hours straight.

It all worked out for the best, however, and fans were elated to see him in the role.
