Fans have eagerly awaited the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and it has finally arrived to rave reviews. After years of anticipation, these two iconic characters are finally sharing the screen, much to the delight of audiences.
The film not only showcases a range of exciting possibilities for the MCU but also hints at significant future developments, particularly concerning Deadpool’s character and his evolving role within the broader storyline.
Interestingly, Deadpool & Wolverine breaks one of Ryan Reynolds’ long-standing rules about Deadpool as the narrator—a detail many may have overlooked. This shift could pave the way for an intriguing team-up with another MCU character known for frequently breaking the fourth wall.
Before we proceed, let’s revisit what the golden rule is. Ryan Reynolds previously explained that in any movie, Deadpool is the only character allowed to break the fourth wall, as he holds the unique privilege of being the unreliable narrator in the story. He put it this way:
There are rules. Very specific rules. You would diminish stakes in the film if everyone – or even anyone else – was also aware of the fourth wall or any kind of meta aspect. Deadpool is the only character who has that ability to do that. If everyone did that, then you would no longer invest in that character as much. You really want to believe that the villain is a villain.
You really want to believe that your costar’s character is true as well. Deadpool can undermine that – and does undermine that – because you don’t want the audience to take him as seriously… I always feel like an absolute dick when I’m trying to explain: I need people as invested as humanly possible in every other character while knowing that only Deadpool is the unreliable narrator.
However, this rule was broken in Deadpool & Wolverine when Nicepool (a Deadpool variant, though) also broke the fourth wall, becoming the second unreliable narrator in the same movie. This shift introduces a range of possibilities, especially given some earlier comments made by Reynolds.
You may recall that we’ve discussed the connection between She-Hulk and Deadpool, though it hasn’t always been a positive one. Yet, these two characters share a unique trait: both are known for breaking the fourth wall. In fact, She-Hulk did it first, debuting this narrative technique in 1989’s Sensational She-Hulk #1, while Deadpool followed in 1997’s Deadpool #11.
Considering this and the fact that Reynolds broke his own rule in Deadpool & Wolverine, a team-up between Deadpool and She-Hulk now seems more plausible, despite Reynolds previously stating it would be challenging due to this very aspect. But now that the rule has been bent… maybe?
