Despite some negative fan reactions, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has gained popularity on Amazon. As previously reported, the show has been renewed for a second season, set to debut with three episodes on August 29, 2024—later today. The highly anticipated new season has finally arrived, and we have some exciting updates to share.

As you might know from our earlier reports, the series has earned a Certified Fresh rating, with critics noting significant improvements from Season 1. The showrunners and cast have promised an even better season, and it looks like they’ve delivered.

Ahead of the premiere, co-showrunner Patrick McKay and executive producer Lindsey Weber have shared new details about the upcoming season, teasing that it will be “mistier and darker”—a change that fans are sure to appreciate!

In a major interview with The Wrap, McKay and Weber discussed the upcoming season of The Rings of Power, confirming that viewers can expect something quite different. While the full interview covered a range of topics, this report focuses on their comments about the tone of the new season. Weber provided a glimpse into what’s to come, saying:

When we were launching Season 1, we were about a month from starting Season 2 and it was all very much happening at the same time. We found lots of opportunities along the way, things evolve, our amazing contributors make suggestions that we think are fantastic, but I think the story has very much the same intention that these guys originally envisioned.

McKay was more specific in his comments, reaffirming that the season will focus heavily on the villains, with Sauron playing a major role:

It’s Sauron’s season, it’s a season that’s dominated by villains, a battle between two villains in Adar and Sauron,” he said. “I think the environment and the weather has also seeped in and very much harmonizes with that darkness. I think people will feel, not in any specific moment but in the collective over the course of the season, it is decidedly more mysterious, mistier and darker.

That wraps up what we wanted to cover in this report. The Rings of Power Season 2 premieres today with three episodes and will continue to release new episodes weekly, as is the format for all of Amazon’s shows. Given everything we’ve heard, it looks like we’re in for an exciting season, and we hope the series lives up to its promises.
