‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Gets Release Date – It’s Going to Be a While Before We See Blue Blur in Action
The critical response to ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ has been mostly positive. The movie is described as the best in the series, with Jim Carrey’s performance receiving particular acclaim. Critics also praised the portrayal of Shadow by Reeves, calling it emotionally resonant and adding depth to the film.
As of January, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ has earned $219 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $203.5 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide gross to $422.5 million. The movie was expected to be a success so nobody was surprised when it was announced officially that the movie would be getting a sequel.
In September 2024, producer Toby Ascher revealed plans for more ‘Sonic’ films. Actors Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves both showed interest in spin-off movies focused on their characters.
Then, in December 2024, it was confirmed that a fourth ‘Sonic’ movie was in development, with a release date set for March 19, 2027. Despite his character seeming to have died in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, Jim Carrey mentioned in January 2025 that he would be open to returning for the fourth film, but only if the storyline intrigued him.
In an interview with Screen Rant, the director Jeff Fowler discussed the plans for ‘Sonic 4’ after the teasers in the post-credits scenes of ‘Sonic 3.’ Fowler explained that while they were busy finishing ‘Sonic 3,’ they carefully considered what characters to introduce in the post-credits scenes, ensuring they had clear ideas for their future roles.
He emphasized that the creative discussions were still in the early stages, and there was a lot of work left to be done. Fowler also mentioned that casting decisions would depend on the story, ensuring each character served the script’s needs.
I mean, usually the way these post-credit teasers work is we’re so jamming on finishing the film, but at the same time, you don’t want to just throw characters in there and not know what you’re going to do with them. So, there’s certainly, as we were winding down on Sonic 3, and as we were prepping that post-credit teaser, we absolutely have had a lot of really great creative discussions and got excited by some ideas.
I love to just watch the fan conversation, and just see where things go. Obviously, casting is such a huge part of any of these characters, but it does kind of come from the needs of the story and of the script. So, I think I want to make sure that, whatever direction it goes, that it is servicing the character needs for whatever story is being told.
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 19, 2027. Paramount has not provided any additional details about the movie yet, aside from the release date.
