Do you remember when Sony’s ‘Madame Web‘ was in theaters earlier this year? It feels like a long time ago now. The female-led Spider-Man spin-off was meant to launch a new series of movies but fell short at the box office and with fans. Despite earning $100 million, it failed to break even, disappointing both audiences and critics alike. After a quick theatrical run, it was released for streaming early on Netflix, where it gained unexpected success. We reported on its strong debut on May 14, 2024.
Today, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter,’ Madame Web continues to lead as the most-watched streaming movie, with 1.16 billion minutes viewed, surpassing all other films on streaming platforms. It’s impressive to see its sustained popularity a month after its release!
‘Madame Web’ tells the story of the titular character within the Spider-Man universe, featuring an all-female main cast. Dakota Johnson stars in the title role, alongside Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor. The ensemble also includes Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott. Unfortunately, the movie was disappointed at the box office and received mostly negative reviews, with both fans and critics unsatisfied.
Rotten Tomatoes gave Madame Web a dismal 11% rating, with critics noting, “Madame Web’s’ earnest approach to the title character’s origin story has its appeal, but its predictable plot and uneven execution result in a forgettable superhero adventure.” The audience rating was slightly higher at 57%, agreeing that while not groundbreaking, the movie manages to tell an entertaining origin story.
In case you’re interested in the movie, here is a quick overview of the plot:
In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future… and realizes she can use that insight to change it. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies…if they can all survive a deadly present.
It debuted on Netflix in May, and since then, it has been drawing increasing numbers of viewers, which is both unexpected and fantastic!
