Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Concludes with ‘Kraven: The Hunter’ as the Final Chapter Reports Claim

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) was a film franchise centered around characters from Spider-Man-related Marvel Comics. It began in 2013, with Sony planning spin-offs from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, including a Venom movie.

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed, Sony partnered with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, while continuing to develop a separate Venom universe.

The SSU included the Venom franchise (which recently released its final installment, Venom: The Last Dance), Morbius, Madame Web, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter. Most of these films received poor reviews, with Morbius and Madame Web particularly criticized.

As Kraven the Hunter prepares for its release, early projections for the movie’s box office performance are grim. These projections, based on pre-sale data and key metrics, are often a reliable indicator of a film’s success, though not always 100% accurate. If a movie is projected to earn $30 million, for example, it’s unlikely to gross $250 million on opening weekend, with final numbers typically aligning closely with initial estimates.

Sony had hoped Kraven the Hunter would become the next big hit in the SSU, following Venom‘s success. However, early projections suggest it may follow in the footsteps of Morbius or even Madame Web. The film is currently expected to earn just $20–25 million during its opening weekend, which is disappointing for a high-budget action film with a $130 million price tag.

Kraven the Hunter will also have a limited release, opening in 1,000 fewer theaters than Morbius and Madame Web. According to The Wrap’s latest analysis, Sony has spent a staggering amount trying to expand Spider-Man’s universe without the web-slinger himself, and if their source is correct, Kraven could mark the end of the SSU.

A top talent agent told The Wrap that Sony is now shifting its focus back to Spider-Man himself. Upcoming projects include the highly anticipated Spider-Verse film and Amazon’s Spider-Man: Noir series, which has already received rave reviews based on set leaks.

They’ve developed what they want to develop for now. It’s really about the next ‘Spider-Man’ film

A second Sony insider revealed that the studio is now shifting its focus to Tom Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man movie, which is set to kick off a new trilogy in the MCU.

This shift was apparent as soon as the marketing for Kraven the Hunter began. Both Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the film’s star, and director J.C. Chandor urged fans to support the movie, hinting that if it gets enough backing, we might eventually see Kraven’s Last Hunt and potentially bring Spider-Man into the SSU.

However, if the projections are accurate, Kraven the Hunter seems destined for failure, marking the likely end of the SSU.
