‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the biggest superhero hit released in the last few years. The movie has seen tremendous success both at the box office and with the audiences, somewhat ending the dry spell that the MCU was caught in.

Much of that success can be owed to cameos of Marvel legacy characters. We’ve seen the likes of Wesley Snipes return as Blade, Garner return as Elektra, and even some favorite fan castings like Channing Tatum’s Gambit.

Fans were however expecting more important characters to reprise their roles from the former Fox’s X-Men franchise, and among them was Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner and Famke Janssen. Ultimately it was rumored that Janssen would appear, but fans were left short regarding both actresses.

Famke Janssen’s portrayal of Jean Grey in the earlier ‘X-Men’ films set a high bar, and many fans had strong attachments to that version. Turner’s portrayal was often compared unfavorably to Janssen’s, which may have affected perceptions of her performance.

Turner also had weak scripts to work with, which further put her in a bad light, but considering that Garner’s portrayal of Elektra was also terrible back in the day and now fans love it, I’m certain that time and nostalgia will change the opinions of many fans.

In any case, we’ve never heard Janssen’s explanation regarding her absence but Turner recently spoke to Variety about her absence and she revealed something interesting.

Apparently, she did sign something related to the movie and her on-screen character but was never expected to appear in the movie in person. Turner also explained that era is behind her, so we shouldn’t expect to see her in future MCU projects, including ‘Secret Wars.’

No, I mean, I think, I think there’s, like, some sort of thing at the end where they used a clip from X-Men. I remember signing some sort of contract.

But no, that part of my life I think is well and truly over. I mean, maybe not — I love doing superhero-y action stuff, but I think the Jean Grey storyline for me is probably. It’s had its time.

Turner’s unwillingness to return to the character, as I’ve mentioned before, probably had something to do with the fact that her story was weak in general.

In both ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Dark Phoenix, ‘Jean’s character was not given enough depth or development compared to her comic book counterpart. Many fans felt that her storyline lacked plenty of factors to truly do justice to her comic evolution.

Even if we shouldn’t count on Turner to appear as Jean Grey, we can still hope that Janssen might be more willing to return to her iconic role.
