MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing but stopped due to the solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time. Now that the development of the movie is back on, we decided to summarize everything we know about it in this comprehensive guide.
The plot can go either Multiversal or in a street-level direction
‘Spider-Man 3’ already started with the Multiversal theme that the rest of the franchise is currently stepping into, and despite the movie being received well there’s been some talk that Feige wants to do something else with the upcoming movie.
None of this was confirmed keep that in mind as we are talking about rumors here, but Jon Watts, Holland, and Feige reportedly discussed whether the story will continue following the Multiversal theme or go street-level, to include some of the most notable street-level heroes in the franchise, especially with Kingpin and Daredevil joining the franchise.
When it was officially announced that Jon Watts exited the franchise as the director, many insiders took it as a sign that Feige won the argument and that the upcoming movie would certainly be street-level.
Holland also recently confirmed that he has more creative freedom and more input as they are going through various scripts. The director is still unknown but there were a couple of candidates in the past starting with Watts returning to helm the franchise, Drew Goddard, and Justin Lin. All of them at one point started working on different projects so they seem unlikely to direct it.
The most recent word is that Sam Raimi will direct ‘Spider-Man 4.’
What do we know about the cast?
Tom Holland will return to reprise his role as Peter Parker. Almost a year ago he claimed that he would return to act in the sequel only if the story is worth his time, but several days ago he stated that he would always return to the MCU since he owes his career to the role.
A couple of weeks back Zendaya was also confirmed to reprise her role as MJ despite not having any recollection of who Peter Parker is. Jacob Batalon stated recently that he has no idea whether the studio has plans to include him in the sequel. Matt Murdock’s Daredevil & Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin are also rumored to appear, which is what started the “street-level” rumors in the first place.
Recent reports also indicated that Sydney Sweeney was cast as Black Cat in the MCU, as well as that the movie will be the first live-action project to include Miles Morales.
The movie currently doesn’t have a set release date
The script for ‘Spider-Man 4’ is still not finished, but the movie is currently aiming to start production in late 2024, which means that we can expect the movie sometime in 2026, if not later.
