The long wait is over and ‘Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew’ finally released! Created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford- The story follows a group of kids, likely Force-sensitive, who embark on an adventure to find their way back home after getting lost following a mysterious discovery.
The story features a lot of similarities with children’s classics such as ‘The Goonies,’ but is watchable for both children and adults, as there will be a similar element to the hit series ‘The Mandalorian,’ which also features an adult (Din Djarin) taking care of a baby (Grogu).
The show stars Jude Law, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Robert Timothy Smith, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon, and Jaleel White rounding out the cast.
With two new episodes under its belt, the first reactions to the show are finally in and they are glowing. Based on Rotten Tomatoes’ overall score, the show currently stands at a strong 93 % when it comes to the critics based on 36 reviews and 87% when it comes to the audiences.
Critics mostly praise its nostalgic, Amblin-style energy, blending Star Wars charm with a coming-of-age adventure reminiscent of ‘The Goonies.’ Overall, early reviews suggest a fun, exciting new addition to the Star Wars universe.
With so much intrigue already in place, it’s a story that feels poised to both honor and expand the Star Wars universe.
Adrian Ruiz – But Why Tho?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew hits the right marks using known commodities. It borrows liberally from ’80s era children’s classics for a scrappy kids adventure with heavy pirate themes. Audiences will sense a familiar Spielberg and Zemeckis vibe.
Julian Roman – MovieWeb
The first three episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew promise a fun, low-stakes adventure into the galaxy we know and love.
Jonathan Sim – ComingSoon.net
This is a perfectly fun entry in the ever-expanding Star Wars canon: light and frothy by design, driven by a genuinely sweet cast of younglings at the fore.
John Nugent – Empire Magazine
Not all reviews have been positive, however. While certainly in the minority, some critics noted several problems with the show. Negative reviews of ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ criticize the series for relying too heavily on nostalgia, borrowing from past cinematic eras without adding anything new or memorable.
The show struggles with its premise, failing to establish a strong identity as a TV series. The introduction of its main characters feels awkward, and the story moves slowly, only gaining some interest when Jude Law’s character appears. Overall, the series is seen as a forgettable and underwhelming start.
That’s all that “Skeleton Crew” offers: appropriation for a halcyon era of cinema and little else. Worse, the exceptional Spielberg-ian tenor of marvel and amazement is absent, leaving behind a mostly hollow, fairly unremarkable, forgettable product.
Rodrigo Perez – The Playlist
All of these assets are buried under one problem: this is a premise that doesn’t know how to be a TV show yet.
Zack Handlen – Bostone Globe
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew gets off to a depressingly familiar start, while bungling the introduction of its primary protagonists and generally plodding along until Jude Law pops up.
