Steven Knight has officially exited his role as writer for the upcoming Star Wars: New Jedi Order, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and starring Daisy Ridley—a move that may come as a letdown to fans. The project has already seen multiple setbacks and prominent departures, sparking comparisons to the challenged Blade reboot.
Knight reportedly struggled with the script over the past year, producing four drafts without finalizing one. Continuous feedback from Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy necessitated ongoing revisions. According to Matt Belloni of Puck, Knight’s departure likely pushes the film’s release beyond its intended December 2026 date.
The Star Wars: New Jedi Order project, in development for two years, has already seen several writers, including Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, depart over creative differences. Now, Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly reconsidering whether to move forward with this Rey-focused storyline, intended to showcase her efforts in leading a new generation of Jedi.
The decision to appoint Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, best known for her documentary work, as director also sparked discussion, and rumors suggest she may be replaced. This adds to the challenges faced by Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, intensifying questions about the franchise’s future direction.
In brighter news for fans, however, the origin film Dawn of the Jedi has been confirmed to start production next year.
