‘Stranger Things 5’: The Final Season Feels Like Eight Blockbuster Movies Tease Creators – New Spinoffs Also in the Works
The end of ‘Stranger Things’ is near, but according to creators Matt and Ross Duffer, the final season will be the biggest and most emotional one yet.
During Netflix’s 2025 slate preview event in Los Angeles, the Duffer Brothers shared new details about ‘Stranger Things 5,’ revealing a behind-the-scenes teaser and confirming that multiple spinoffs are in the works. However, their focus remained on delivering an epic conclusion to the story of Hawkins.
Ross Duffer emphasized the scale of the final season, revealing that production lasted a full year, resulting in over 650 hours of footage. “So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies,” he said. “It’s pretty, pretty insane.”
But it’s not just about spectacle. Matt Duffer described Stranger Things 5 as the show’s “most personal” story yet, highlighting the deep emotional connection the cast and crew have developed after nearly a decade of working together. “It was super intense and emotional to film—for us and for our actors. There was a lot of crying. So much crying,” he admitted. “The show means so much to all of us, and everyone put their hearts and souls into it. We hope—and believe—that passion is going to translate to the screen.”
Season 5 will begin with a one-year time jump from the Stranger Things 4 finale and promises to dive straight into the action. “There’s no time for a ramp-up. It’s going to be intense from beginning to end,” Matt Duffer added.
While ‘Stranger Things 5’ will bring the main storyline to a close, the Duffer Brothers have no plans to leave the world of Hawkins behind. Matt Duffer confirmed that new projects set in the ‘Stranger Things’ universe are already in development.
“There are more Stranger Things stories to tell and in the works,” he revealed.
“It’s a bit early at this point to talk about them, but we’re deeply involved in every one. It’s very important to us that anything with the Stranger Things name on it is of the highest quality and not repetitive, that it has a reason to exist and always blazes its own path. And also, it needs to basically just be awesome—or we need to think it’s awesome. And there are a lot of what we think are awesome things in the pipeline.”
