This blog is dedicated to your wife, my wife, and every wife within the comic universe. Without you, we are only half as good as we could be.
“Behind every great man stands no woman. There is no greater man than the man that can acknowledge the woman standing right next to him”
Unknown
You may or may not have a woman in your life. You know the kind…strong, independent, caring, someone who believes in you…a real superhero. If you don’t have one, you need to find one. If you do have one, hold onto her.
Do as your Mother and Grandmother taught you and treat them with respect. I for one learned many things from my Grandmother and Mother. While most won’t readily admit it, I will proudly tell you that, when she was alive, I was a Grandma’s boy and I am currently a Mamma’s boy.
I believe that if either of them didn’t show me that a woman is as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside, I wouldn’t be the man I am today. Not only that, but I wouldn’t have the wife that I have right now. My wife is the most beautiful and important person in my life…period.
Questions
Wives of comic and “toy” collectors must sit there and wonder why we like those things?
Yours has probably asked you, “When are you going to grow up?” or “Do you have Peter Pan syndrome?”.
That’s the beauty of it, though. No matter the questions, they always seem to understand.
When trying to explain this phenomenon, I often think about the expression, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.” Perhaps, this is why wives all over the world simply accept it.
Sue Storm
When you think of comic book marriages, the Fantastic Four had better be the first to come to mind.
Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) and the Invisible Woman (Sue Storm) are the “it” couple and the comic book definition of what it takes to have a successful marriage.
Sure, they’ve argued but through all their arguments they have proven that love really does conquer all. Even during the times that they found themselves on opposite sides of the battle (Civil War), they were able to overcome their differences and continue to be the glue that held the team together.
I think that they remain such a solid and integral couple within Marvel is because Sue Storm is ever-supportive of Reed. Even when Reed is being the jerk that you know he can be, Sue is there by his side, giving her full support to his endeavors. If it wasn’t for Sue Storm, this couple would become just another divorce statistic.
Gold standard
Lois Lane and Superman are one of the most recognizable couples in comics. Superman knew what it would take for him to become the man he was destined to be…Lois Lane.
Here he is, a man from another planet, with an understanding that to be truly happy he needed to have a woman by his side.
From day one he protected her and she protected him. He would be there whenever she was in danger, and in return, she would learn of his secret identity (Clark Kent) and hold onto it like super glue stuck to your fingers.
Learning that he was Superman didn’t change anything. If anything, it heightened her appreciation for him. She knew that he had commitments (albeit to an entire planet) and didn’t utter a word when duty called. How could she? He was always going to go anyway.
It’s all about trust and these two have it.
Red, blue, and red
Much like Superman and Lois Lane, the story of Peter Parker and Mary Jane has had its ups and downs.
Imagine yourself being married to a superhero? How would you handle them going out each night, risking their lives to fight crime in nothing more than a glorified unitard? For Mary Jane, this is a reality. The beauty of it is that like Lois, she seems to accept and understand Peter’s desire to make the world a better place.
This ladies and gentlemen is the definition of standing by your man. This ladies and gentlemen is the ultimate sacrifice.
Marriage is hard, hard work. It isn’t easy to find someone who can run through the puddles, see movies where men get into skin tight costumes to fight crime, and allow you to be who you really are. I promise you this…if you happen to find one, hold on to her, never let her go, and tell her how much you love her every day.
Cheers to all the wives out there.
