After Zack Snyder’s DCEU came to an end, Marvel veteran James Gunn was brought in to rebuild the DC cinematic universe, giving rise to the DCU.
While the true launch of the DCU’s film slate is set for next year with the release of Superman: Legacy, several future projects are already in the works, offering more insight into what’s ahead than what’s happening now.
One of the most anticipated projects is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, slated for a 2026 release, with filming expected to start in early 2025. Although details are scarce, we know it will be based on Tom King’s comic series of the same name.
Milly Alcock is set to portray Supergirl, and with the script already completed, the timeline aligns with filming kicking off in a few months. According to rumors, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is shaping up to be so powerful, that it might just bring us to tears.
Supergirl previously had her own solo movie in 1984, which was part of the so-called Donnerverse, tying into the Superman films starring Christopher Reeve.
Unfortunately, the film was largely considered a failure and is often cited as one of the worst superhero movies ever made. With that in mind, James Gunn faces a significant challenge, as the new Supergirl movie not only needs to redeem the character but also meet the high expectations set by the popular TV series.
Though the movie is still in the planning stages, early rumors have begun to surface, and it seems the new Supergirl film is shaping up to be something special.
This is definitely an exciting rumor, but as with all rumors, it’s important to take it with a grain of salt. The tweet in question hasn’t been confirmed by any reliable sources, so “someone” could easily be anyone—or no one.
Still, we’re hopeful it’s true, as it would signal two things: (1) Supergirl is finally getting the proper feature film she deserves, and (2) James Gunn is fully committed to building a strong DCU franchise. Ultimately, the biggest winners would be the fans, which is why we’re rooting for this to become a reality.
Speaking of fans, what’s their reaction? Here’s a look at some of the comments, many of which are positive, showing that most fans are just as excited about this possibility:
