We’re more than two years away from the upcoming Superman reboot, which will also serve as the first big-screen installment of DCU. This new cinematic universe will replace DCEU as the mainstream cinematic universe based on DC characters. Still, we’re getting more and more information about it every day. And while most of the reports arriving this early should always be taken with a grain of salt, exploring them while we wait for the movie is interesting.

‘Superman: Legacy’ was first announced last February by the co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, who was also confirmed as the writer and director. James Gunn is currently one of the most known filmmakers in the superhero genre after writing and directing the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy for Marvel Studios and ‘The Suicide Squad’ and its spin-off series ‘Peacemaker’ for DC. He’s definitely an experienced filmmaker, but making a new Superman movie will surely be his most ambitious project yet, particularly because that movie should set up a whole new franchise.

Superman: Legacy will reportedly introduce a team on which the second DCU movie will be based on!

In February, James Gunn announced the first five DCU movies currently in development, along with five TV shows. ‘Superman: Legacy’ will be the first DCU movie, and it’s currently the only one with confirmed release date. According to Gunn, the second DCU movie will be ‘The Authority,’ which will follow a title team of superheroes known as the anti-Justice League, who get the job done by any means necessary.

It was previously reported that the ending of ‘Superman: Legacy’ would lead straight into the events of ‘‘The Authority,’ but according to the latest report, these two movies might be even more connected than we realize. According to THR, the upcoming Superman movie will feature the members of the Authority. The casting process for the team members should begin after James Gunn officially finds Clark Kent and Lois Lane for ‘Superman: Legacy.’

As we already know, DCU will introduce a brand-new Superman on the big screen, as Henry Cavill played his last part in the post-credit scene of ‘Black Adam.’ Gunn confirmed that he’s looking to depict a younger Superman during his first years in Metropolis. Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet, and Tom Brittney are reportedly the top candidates for the next Man of Tomorrow, while Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan, and Phoebe Dynevor are in the final run for the role of Lois Lane. The final screen tests are expected to happen on Father’s Day weekend this month.

Apart from ‘Superman: Legacy’ and ‘The Authority,’ DC Studios is also developing ‘Swamp Thing,’ ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ and ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ which is set to introduce Batman, played by a new actor, in this cinematic universe. So far, James Mangold has signed to write and direct ‘Swamp Thing,’ while ‘The Flash’ director Andy Muschietti is reportedly a candidate to direct ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ although that’s not confirmed yet.

Written and directed by James Gunn, ‘Superman: Legacy’ is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025. ‘The Authority’ movie’s release date is still TBA.
