‘Superman & Lois’ Season 3 Ep 8: Recap & Ending Explained

Welcome to the recap and ending explained for episode 8 of the third season of Superman & Lois titled “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” We knew that some big things were being set up for this episode due to Natalie’s involvement with Matteo, and all our expectations have been met, even surpassed.
Bruno Mannheim and John Henry Irons, at the same time, figured out that their children were involved. This led to a massacre inside the restaurant, and Peia nearly dying. At the same time, Clark & Lois figure out that Lex Luthor was jailed for a crime he didn’t commit, and additional drama is brewing because Kyle Cushing might figure out that Jordan has superpowers.
Considering that Superman & Lois is taking a week-looking break, we’re not surprised that this episode left us gripping the edge of our seats. Now, let’s see how the episode played out in a bit more detail.
Lois doesn’t want to investigate Bruno Mannheim anymore
Over the course of the last few episodes, we know that Lois has gotten close with Peia Mannheim, Bruno’s wife, who is secretly a supervillain going under the name Onomatopoeia. Considering that both of them are fighting cancer and Lois knows what Peia is going through, she refuses to publish the story about her secret marriage to Bruno Mannheim that Chrissy has been working on for the past several weeks.
Lois feels guilty for even investigating them, but Clark and Chrissy insist that people need to know what kind of dealings Bruno has with the Intergang and the underworld. I can understand Lois’ point of view; it would be ghoulish and cruel to kick someone when he’s down. She feels a certain kind of camaraderie with Peia due to both of them going through essentially the same disease.
However, Peia certainly hasn’t spared any thought for her victims. She killed innocent people, criminals & people suffering from terminal diseases (Atom-Man) without batting an eyelash to enable her husband & his crimes. She doesn’t necessarily deserve revenge, but she does deserve justice, just like her victims.
In any case, Lois wants to drop the story, Clark tries to talk her into continuing the investigation, and Sam Lane helps out as well. He brings tons of classified files for Lois to investigate. Among the files are photos from the crime scene on the night that Boss Moxie was found dead.
Superman connects his injuries to the ones that Atom-Man had when Onomatopoeia killed him with her voice. Lex Luthor has gone down for killing Boss Moxie, and a tape holds his confession. Lois, Chrissy, and Clark decide to listen to the confession tape once again, and Clark hears that specific buzzing and humming in the background that is specific to Onomatopoeia.
This is the final proof that Lex Luthor wasn’t responsible for the death of Boss Moxie and his henchmen. It had to be Bruno Mannheim and Onomatopoeia.
What happened during Natalie’s dinner with Matteo & the Mannheims
In the previous episode, we found out that the boy Natalie Irons is dating is none other than Matteo Mannheim, Bruno’s & Peia’s son. She was supposed to have dinner with the crime family at their favorite restaurant, and John Henry decided to drop her off in Metropolis and kill some time before she is done, visiting the sister of his doppelganger, Dr. Irons, whose life he previously saved.
Just hours before dinner, Peia is not feeling well. The last round of chemo did virtually nothing for her, and the cancer is aggressively spreading. Bruno is worried, but Peia insists that they should go to dinner.
At the restaurant, Natalie is perfectly pleasant, and Bruno is as well. They are having a good time sharing stories. Bruno is even joking around. No one would suspect that this person is responsible for thousands of deaths. Peia feels weak and sick; at one point, she even loses control over her powers. Luckily no one noticed, except for the slight shaking of the table that Natalie noticed.
The evening is about to get worse since during his conversation with his “sister,” Dr. Irons; John Henry finds out that the restaurant where Natalie is having dinner currently is frequently attended by Bruno Manheim. John Henry Irons decides to visit the restaurant, and to his shock, he can see Natalie having dinner with Bruno and Peia.
He orders Natalie to leave right away, but Bruno gets mad. Bruno’s Men surround John Henry, and Natalie and Matteo are taken outside not to see bloodshed. Bruno proceeds to beat down John Henry. He doesn’t even have time to put on his suit. Bruno reminds him that he promised him the next time he sees him, he will show him his other side, brutal and violent.
John Henry somehow manages to put on his suit, and Superman is alerted. John Henry and Peia start fighting while Peia exhausts herself screaming everyone to oblivion using her sound-based powers. Superman arrives after the worst of the fight is over, and Peia turns on him too, and starts screaming directly at him. However, since she is extremely sick, she can’t maintain her powers for a long time, and she loses consciousness and falls to the ground. Bruno fears that Peia might be dead, and Superman tells him that she will be if he doesn’t take her to the hospital.
Superman brings Peai to the D.O.D., where her state is stabilized. She is still, however, a threat and needs surveillance.
Kyle Cushing might soon discover that Jordan has superpowers
We know that Jonathan started volunteering as a firefighter, but he was only bringing them coffee so far. Kyle Cushing finally decides to “promote him.” Jonathan now has his own suit and is permitted to go on emergencies with them. On his first day, a fire breaks out, and Kyle agrees to take him with them; under one condition, he must always stay near the truck.
At the emergency site, Jonathan sees fire consuming the building and a person dressed all in black flying inside. That can be none other than Jonathan. Jordan pulls a man from the burning building and leaves him on the side with Jonathan. Kyle sees Jonathan crouching over the man and assumes he went inside the burning building against his orders. He gets really mad and even threatens Jonathan with termination.
Jonathan is understandably mad and confronts Jordan, who is at Sarah’s house. Once there, he tells Jordan that he got him into big trouble with Kyle and asks him to stay clear of his business. Jordan, in turn, tells Jonathan that he saves people with his superpowers and rubs it in Jonathan’s nose, accusing him of being a glorified coffee barista.
This really hurt Jonathan’s feelings. The fact that he doesn’t have superpowers is a sensitive topic as it is. He storms out. Sarah tells Jordan that he shouldn’t have said that, and Jordan decides to apologize.
When Jordan finds Jonathan, he is on the phone with Kyle. Kyle reveals to him that fire has been put out through superhuman means, which means that they are onto Jordan, and his secret might be out if he doesn’t figure out how to work a bit more subtly.
Bizarro Superman has been resurrected
We know that Bruno Mannheim & the Intergang stole Superman’s blood from the D.O.D. and used it to induce superpowers in criminals with terminal diseases. We also know that Deadline broke into the D.O.D.’s building to distract Superman while the rest of the Intergang “raids the shelves.” They stole the corpse of Bizarro Superman, and the last we saw it, he was still dead, and all experiments to revive him had failed.
In the last scenes of episode 8, we can see Bizarro Superman opening his eyes, meaning that the experiments worked, and now the real trouble begins.
As we’ve mentioned before, Superman & Lois is taking a week-long break, and to see what will happen with Bizarro, we’re going to wait until May 23d, when the ninth episode drops on CW.
