‘Superman & Lois’ Season 3 Will End on Cliffhanger Despite the Season 4 Uncertainty

When you’re a fan of some seasonal programming, absolutely the worst thing that can happen (apart from maybe your favorite character leaving the series) is that the series finishes on a cliffhanger without a proper ending. Guaranteed, each one of us can name several TV shows that were canceled with their last episode ending on a cliffhanger, and it’s really frustrating to realize you will never find out that cliffhanger plays out. It’s not unusual for DC shows to be canceled without giving them a proper ending.
The most recent examples are the Arrowverse shows Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman. The Legends of Tomorrow series started in 2016 as one of the spin-off series set in the shared universe with Arrow and The Flash. After seven seasons, the series was canceled, with the last episode ending with Legends getting arrested with Booster Gold. What happened to them after that, we will never know. Batwoman was also canceled after three seasons on the air.
Superman & Lois Season 3 will end on a cliffhanger, regardless if Season 4 happens or not.
Now, even though Superman & Lois is in danger of being canceled, the president of The CW, Brad Schwartz, teased that the current season will end on a cliffhanger one way or the other.
“The ending this season is amazing. You’ve got some Lex Luthor in there…. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the end of the season is great — and it’s got a bit of a cliffhanger.”

The Superman & Lois series started in February 2021, intended as the newest Arrowverse spin-off. But during the second season, the series was taken on its own course and severed continuity with the rest of the Arrowverse. Arrowverse first started with Arrow in 2013, and it will officially conclude next week with the series finale of The Flash after eleven years of existence.
Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch in title roles. They both debuted in the Arrowverse shows prior (Hoechlin in Supergirl, Tulloch in The Flash). The show came out at the right time for the fans of Superman since we haven’t watched a standalone Superman adventure since 2013’s Man of Steel. James Gunn is currently developing a new movie reboot Superman: Legacy, which is set to be released in 2025, but even if Gunn doesn’t want more than one live-action Superman to exist at the time, Hoechlin could theoretically play Superman for one more season.
Still, the problem is also The CW network which was purchased by Nextar last year, and therefore the network is undergoing a whole rebranding since scripted shows on the network have had very low ratings for the last few years. Despite the series’ positive reviews, the most-watched episode of Superman & Lois this season was “Closer,” which gathered only 0.75 million viewers in the USA. There are some rumors about the series possibly moving to Max if the CW cancels it, but we wouldn’t put our faith into it.
Superman & Lois has three more episodes left to air this season. It’s still not known if the series will be renewed for the next season.
