Batgirl (Characters)
Batgirl is a fictional character in DC Comics, with various different characters assuming the role alongside Batman. Barbara Gordon is the most iconic Batgirl, debuting in ‘Detective Comics’ #359 in 1967 as Commissioner Gordon’s niece/adoptive daughter. She worked alongside Batman, Robin, and other Gotham City vigilantes until her retirement in 1988, following a shooting by the Joker that left her paraplegic. Barbara then became the information expert Oracle. In ‘No Man’s Land,’ Helena Bertinelli briefly took on the Batgirl mantle, followed by Cassandra Cain, who starred in her own series in 2000 and was one of the few prominent Asian characters in American comics. Stephanie Brown later became Batgirl after Cassandra left the role.
