Taika Waititi is mostly known for his unique sense of humor and creativity. He directed the successful movie ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ in 2017, which helped transform the character of Thor in the MCU. Waititi also won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film ‘Jojo Rabbit’ and is involved in many creative projects, including acting and producing in several major franchises.
Waititi recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly and reflected on his first experience with the MCU. Remembering his past project, one of the first movies he commented on was ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’ A project he says torpedoed him into the “nerdosphere.”
‘Thor: Ragnarok propelled me into the nerdosphere, if you will. I was living a really lovely, peaceful life, and as soon as I did this, well boy, did the nerds come for me. They said, ‘This guy’s gonna ruin this. He’s gonna ruin Thor!
It’s like, ‘What, you mean again? “And they were like, ‘He’s gonna ruin this for everyone, Thor’s so cool!’ And I said to them on Twitter — before I left Twitter — I said, ‘You don’t know what you want until I give it to you.
Following the release of ‘Ragnarok’ fans were enchanted with the version that Waititi presented and the movie is still generally best-regarded out of all Thor’s standalone movies in the MCU for its perfect blend of dark themes, humor, and emotional impact.
As faith would have it, Waititi did end up ruining Thor for the fans, but not with ‘Ragnarok.’ ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ released in 2022, is so far one of the most hated Thor installments in the MCU. Plenty of fans accused Waititi of going overboard with ridiculous humor and running Thor’s reputation and his character.
The director admitted on several instances that he took on ‘Love & Thunder’ as his project because he needed the money. During his recent EW discussion, he did not address why ‘Thor 4’ sucked so much, he instead said the movie is “best of the bunch.”
‘Thor: Love & Thunder,’ the best Thor of the bunch. Um, look how jacked Chris [Hemsworth]got. One of my favorite things about this is that […] I so love Natalie [Portman] also Christian Bale, I mean it’s Christian Bale.
Also, Guns N’ Roses a lot of the songs. I did meet Axl Rose once, actually. He had a lot of stories to tell, which I will not share.
But, more on the “Nerds,” Waititi feels he won over geeky audiences again with his work on ‘The Mandalorian,’ where he directed an episode and voiced the droid IG-11. He also shared how directing 75 stormtroopers brought out his inner child, making him feel like he was living his dream. Despite the excitement, he quickly “locked away” that feeling to focus on the work.
Waititi was supposed to direct one of the upcoming Star Wars movies, however, nothing has been heard about the project for months now, with the latest rumors claiming that the project has been canceled altogether. The director recently commented on these “rumored” projects with an odd take on the situation:
What was ever alive? What is death? You know, death is just a new opportunity. More life to grow and flourish,” Waititi joked. “Everything’s always in development. My advice for any filmmaker is, ‘Just say yes to everything.’ Because, you know, things come and go.
And you never know what stage things are. And I’ve been attached to things that have disappeared for three years and then bubbled back up. I’m like, ‘Oh, I thought that thing was dead. Now I’ve got to go do that again.
