Channing Tatum Continues His Gambit Solo Movie Campaign: “I’ve had such a long journey”

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is MCU’s most recent release, and it’s proved to be a box office hit in large part due to the appearance of some live-action Marvel legacy characters. We’ve seen Snipes’ Blade, Garner’s Elektra, and Evans’ Human Torch back in action, but the movie also presented the opportunity for one character who was bound to get his solo movie almost 10 years ago.

Of course, If you’ve been following either Channing Tatum or the movie’s marketing you know that Gambit appears in the movie in a smaller role. It doesn’t seem like a big deal until you learn the back story and how long it took Tatum to actually play him.

Tatum and Gambit have quite a history. The actor and his longtime colleague and producer Reid Carolin had an idea they wanted to pitch to 21st Century Fox. It was going to be a standalone movie that follows the Gambit. It was imagined similarly to Deadpool in its raunchiness and humor. While the 21st Century Fox team liked the idea, they wouldn’t fully approve if it’s Carolin or Tatum directing, since the two never directed anything before. Tatum wanted the movie so badly that he accepted their deal.

But, fate intervened once again, and before the deal could be finalized and the movie could be developed Fox merged with Disney which resulted in the cancelation of the movie.

Nothing has been heard about Gambit until his appearance in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ Following the movie’s release Tatum’s performance was widely praised and campaigns for him to get his own MCU movie were started on several fronts.

The actor confirmed that he’s been talking about the movie with Iger and Feige and now “it’s all in god’s hands.” The deleted scene from the Deadpool movie which was recently revealed also opens the door for the character to appear considering that he survived The Void.

In his recent interview with Blink Twice, Tatum continued his campaign for a solo movie:

I’ve had such a long journey with this person, this character and story and the fact that my buddy let me come be him and play dress up in his movie? I was just very happy,

Plenty of people made ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ true, but the actor stated that he feels the most grateful to Ryan Reynolds for bringing Gambit to life:

These pictures are almost 10 years apart to the day. I sat in the audience when Ryan showed his first peek of Deadpool 1 to the world and I think I ran back stage right after and found him and I think I just hugged him and was like holy shit you did it man. It’s perfect. I didn’t know him really at all back then. But since then I can say that there is almost no one that has had my back in this industry more than Ryan. I thought I had lost Gambit forever. But he fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause I’m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me. I love ya buddy. Shawn Levy as well. Truly such a brilliant creator on every single level. All things happen for a reason. I’m so grateful to be in this movie. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater.
