Disney’s new Star Wars project, The Acolyte, has been streaming on Disney+ since June 4, 2024. Despite facing controversies and review-bombing, the series remains one of the most discussed shows globally, with fans eagerly anticipating each new episode. Episode 5 appeared to signal a return to form, though its long-term impact on the series, both in terms of plot and ratings, remains uncertain. At the very least, it has given fans plenty to discuss.
Recently, we delved into Qimir’s lightsaber and its potential canonical implications, speculating on how The Acolyte could resolve any discrepancies and establish the Sith’s unique weapon as canon. However, Qimir’s armor and helmet have also garnered attention, particularly because they introduce a highly dangerous metal to the live-action Star Wars universe. In the following paragraphs, we will explore the nature of this metal and its functionalities.
Let’s start by noting that Qimir is a distinctive figure in the Star Wars universe. We’ve already discussed the uniqueness of his lightsaber, but his entire appearance, including his armor, is equally intriguing. Besides the clear resemblances to the Knights of Ren, which we’ve covered previously, there’s much to explore about his armor, including Qimir’s distinctive helmet.
If you watched the confrontation with Qimir in Episode 5, you likely noticed how the Jedi’s lightsabers momentarily short-circuited upon contact with Qimir’s armor. This wasn’t a malfunction but rather the effect of Qimir’s armor, which is made of cortosis. Cortosis is a rare metal found on planets like Dinzo and Mokivj, known for its unique property: it can absorb a lightsaber strike and cause it to short-circuit!
Cortosis possesses exceptional energy absorption and transmission coefficients, allowing it to dissipate the energy from blaster bolts upon impact and withstand lightsaber strikes, causing the blades to short-circuit upon contact. Its ability to deflect explosions further solidifies its reputation as one of the most intriguing and durable metals in the galaxy. This unique property gave Qimir a significant advantage in his fight against the Jedi, allowing him to emerge victorious.
Regarding his helmet, Qimir explained that he wears it to prevent Jedi from reading his mind, indicating it is made from a specific material capable of blocking the Force or its abilities to some extent.
Qimir is clearly well-prepared and equipped to confront the Jedi. It will be intriguing to uncover how he attained such readiness, and we look forward to The Acolyte delving into his backstory and unveiling more about him soon.
