The Asterisk Theory in ‘Thunderbolts*’ May Reveal the Symbol’s True Meaning

With Deadpool & Wolverine performing well at the box office and the exciting announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Victor Von Doom, the MCU’s future looks bright again after a string of underwhelming films.

Before the release of the next two major Avengers films, where Downey’s Doctor Doom will be the central antagonist, the MCU has several other projects lined up. One of the most highly anticipated is Thunderbolts*, set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.

The movie remains shrouded in mystery, and while a new trailer has offered a glimpse into the story, it has raised even more questions. One of the biggest mysteries revolves around the asterisk in the title, and we’ve got a few theories on what it could signify.

Recently, actor David Harbour, who portrays the Red Guardian in Thunderbolts*, shared an interesting piece of information regarding the meaning behind the asterisk in the film’s title:

After that, Thunderbolts is coming up and you’re reprising that role in the MCU. Do you know why there is an asterisk in the title?

David Harbour: Yes. (Laughs)

When did you find out why there was an asterisk in the title?

David Harbour: I mean, they retroactively put the asterisk (in). The asterisk was an idea that that someone had…..What can I say that’s not going to get me in trouble? …The asterisk is very cool. I understand why people might put an asterisk there (laughs) I’m excited for the viewers to see that as well. But I, again, I just can’t say anymore.

Harbour didn’t reveal much, but there’s clearly something behind the asterisk. Fans have been buzzing with theories about its meaning, though no one knows for sure what it represents. However, there are plenty of speculations.

One possibility is that the asterisk indicates the Thunderbolts aren’t actually the Thunderbolts we expect, but rather a completely different group being marketed under that name. The asterisk could be a subtle hint or “warning” that things aren’t as straightforward as they seem.

So, who might they really be? Perhaps they’re the Secret Avengers or Dark Avengers. Since Marvel may want to avoid mixing the Avengers brand with this group—especially given the Avengers’ current narrative state—the Thunderbolts* label could just be a temporary cover. Time will tell.
