‘The Batman’ Director Shares First Plot Details and Hints about the Sequel’s Villains

Matt Reeves’ The Batman was a major success, but while it was always intended to exist in a separate continuity from the main DCEU, James Gunn’s takeover and the establishment of the new DCU seem to have significantly influenced ‘The Batman’ series, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Reeves is still developing his trilogy for Warner Bros., but Gunn is also planning his own Batman films as part of the DCU. How these two universes will coexist remains to be seen, especially given the success of Reeves’ film.

The sequel to the original movie, titled ‘The Batman: Part II,’ was scheduled for release in October 2025. Despite some delays due to industry strikes, production details continued to emerge, including the return of key cast and crew members. However, it was eventually announced that the project would be delayed for an entire year, now being scheduled to be released on October 2, 2026.

There were some rumors that the trilogy was canceled overall, rumors that were quickly debunked by anyone involved. Recently, Director Matt Reeves sat down with SFX magazine and talked about some plot details for the movie as well as hinted at some potential villains that might return:

We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC, and they’re super excited. It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn’t even anticipate in the first one.

The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie & it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.

Deeper corruption certainly hints at the Court of Owls. The Court of Owls is depicted as an ancient and covert society that has been manipulating Gotham from behind the scenes for centuries. They control and influence the city’s elite and political figures, effectively ensuring that corruption permeates every level of society. In essence, the Court of Owls represents the deep-seated corruption that has long been embedded in Gotham City’s fabric.

While Court of Owls seems like the most obvious answer to our mystery, a couple of months back speculations appeared that Clayface, Hush, and even Scarecrow might appear in the movie.

Barry Keoghan also somewhat confirmed that Joker might appear in the upcoming movie over half a year ago. How does all that connect to the Court of Owls? Remains to be seen.
