Remember Herogasm? ‘The Boys’ Cast & Crew Reflect on the Filming Process

‘The Boys’ has become one of the most popular comic book series, largely thanks to the success of its TV adaptation, which, in turn, boosted the comic’s popularity. Consistently ranked among the best series of all time, ‘The Boys’ has a dedicated fanbase eager to learn more about its production.

In this report, we’ll revisit a memorable storyline from Season 3: the controversial “Herogasm.” This infamous scene, one of the most shocking in the series, was adapted directly from the comic book—though it was toned down for television.

As you might expect, filming this particular scene was quite unique. The cast and crew of ‘The Boys’ have recently shared their memories and experiences, revealing what it was really like to film “Herogasm.”

Showrunner Eric Kripke shared with Entertainment Weekly that he had wanted to bring “Herogasm” to the screen since the beginning. However, there was no chance of doing it in Season 1, so they had to wait until the series became a proper hit to pull it off.

“I don’t like to back down from a challenge. It’s really how I made all my creative choices. There was no way we could have sold that pitch the first season. (…) I would describe [Amazon’s] reaction as more like a kid who keeps asking for a cookie. They were like, ‘We knew that this was gonna happen sooner or later. You should just go do it.’ (…) Walking through ‘Herogasm’ is a dangerous and sticky endeavor.”

In the same interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jensen Ackles recalled the odd atmosphere on set: “The whole set felt a bit… odd. People looked like they had seen things they couldn’t unsee. One of our camera operators even said, ‘Man, I’ve seen some s— today!’ I’ll never forget that.” Kripke corroborated this, adding, “Dotted all over the set were huge bottles of lube as set decoration, and also huge bottles of hand sanitizer because of COVID. So every 10 minutes, you’d hear someone yell ‘oh s—!’ after mistaking lube for hand sanitizer.”

One of the “victims” of this mix-up was Erin Moriarty, who plays Starlight, and she shared her experience:

“I was exploring the set for the first time and it was loaded with sex toys that I didn’t even know existed, sex swings, and a bed that rotates on an electrical rotation device. It just was filled with so many goodies. I was walking around and touching all of these dildos and I go to use some hand sanitizer. I pressed the pump and the entire crew went, ‘No! No! No! No! No! No!’ That just symbolizes so, so much.”

However, she revealed that she quickly got used to the atmosphere:

“I’ve never seen so much full-frontal nudity, simulated sex, and genitalia in my life. By day 5, I was walking around a house full of naked people thinking, ‘They may as well be dressed. It doesn’t matter anymore.’ It was also so hilarious that I would even become desensitized to something like that.”

Chace Crawford, who plays The Deep, was particularly excited about “Herogasm,” especially since The Deep’s role was quite significant in that scene:

“I was like, ‘Perfect. [Been] looking forward to it all my career.’ I was really excited. There was definitely a conversation to make sure like, how are we going to do this? What’s the logistics? Is it going to be moving? (…) You put this harness around. [It’s] kind of heavy. Erin had not seen any of it. I had done the special effects test and everything, but the actual shoot was pretty quick. Dealing with the moving octopus was a lot. It was a first, that’s for sure.”

As you can see, filming was quite an experience, and that scene from ‘The Boys’ remains unforgettable. What did you think of it? Did the writers and cast do a good job, or was it all just a bit too much? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
