The Calatrava will be the headquarters of the United Nations. At least in the immediate future (mid-November) and, a little further on, in the time in which the new installment of the MCU will be set, scheduled for release in July 2025 and which will film in Oviedo in less than a month.
‘The Fantastic Four First Steps,’ has not reached Oviedo thanks to the work of the Film Commission, but rather to the latest advertising campaigns developed in the city and in the Palacio de Congresos in the heat of the Gastronomic Capital.
These projects were linked to very popular characters such as José Andrés, and some freelance technicians knew these spaces. This allowed someone to then suggest the location to the production company in charge of this part of the filming.
The team that moved to Oviedo six months ago was delighted with the Palacio de Congresos and decided to include it in the ‘ The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, directed by Matt Shakman.
Although they also considered looking for exteriors in Asturias, and several were explored, the bulk of the chosen locations will be concentrated in Scotland. The filming of the super production has already begun, and it seems that Oviedo will host the final stages, given that the premiere is scheduled for the summer of next year.
The arrival of the production team in Oviedo will mean the arrival of some 200 technicians, some of whom have already begun to install the material in the building with which they will “make up” the Calatrava to turn it into the headquarters of the United Nations Organization of the movie.
The City Council has also reinforced and started an extra cleaning of the building in preparation for the shots that could be filmed outside, although most of them will take place inside: in the auditorium, the entrance hall, and the glass room.
A casting campaign was also launched for the filming, which took place last week in the same venue where the Marvel-Disney film will be shot, and which attracted half a thousand people to apply for one of the extras.
The production company in Spain in charge of coordinating the filming has signed an agreement with the Oviedo City Council for 30,000 euros to occupy the spaces needed for the film, dismantle and reassemble the equipment at the Palacio de Congresos.
The filming has forced activities to be moved to the auditoriums of the Príncipe Felipe Auditorium, but it has also opened the door to more experiences of this type, as the production company itself is currently considering returning to the Calatrava for another project at the end of the year, in December.
