Joe Lam’s upcoming movie The Fetus dives into the growing trend of body horror, offering a chilling mix of horror and comedy. The story follows a couple, Alessa and Chris, as they try to uncover the unsettling truth behind their pregnancy, only to discover that a demonic entity is growing inside her. The film promises a fresh, blood-soaked twist on the natal horror genre.
Lauren LaVera, known for her standout performance in Terrifier 3, takes the lead as Alessa. Her recent success has made her a rising star in the horror world, and The Fetus seems like another great opportunity for her to showcase her talents. Joining her is horror legend Bill Moseley (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, House of 1000 Corpses) as Alessa’s father, Maddox, and Julian Curtis (Are You Afraid of the Dark? Ghost Island) as her partner, Chris.
The first trailer hints at a thrilling and grotesque journey. It opens with Alessa’s shocking discovery that she’s pregnant, despite her doctor’s warning that her body is different from most others. Desperate for answers, she and Chris visit Maddox, hoping he can help.
However, things take a darker turn when Maddox appears to have his own sinister motives, locking the couple away while Alessa grapples with the realization that her unborn child is demonic. To survive, the entity requires human victims.
Director Joe Lam, known for his work in short films, steps into feature-length storytelling with The Fetus. In a statement, Lam explained that the film isn’t just about horror—it also explores complex family dynamics and emotional struggles, using the demonic fetus as a metaphor for deeper fears and relationships. Lam aims to push the boundaries of the horror genre and touch on socially relevant themes, including debates surrounding choice and parenthood.
The Fetus is set for release in March 2025, though a specific date hasn’t been confirmed. The trailer promises a wild mix of practical effects and psychological tension, drawing comparisons to classics like Rosemary’s Baby while carving out its own unique space. For LaVera, this role offers a chance to expand her range as an actor, moving from the physical toughness of Sienna in Terrifier to the emotionally fraught Alessa.
With The Fetus, Lam aims to deliver a story that is both terrifying and thought-provoking. If the trailer is any indication, this movie could leave a lasting impression on the horror scene while further cementing LaVera as one of the genre’s brightest stars.
