Put any and all doubts aside right now. I’m gonna say it. The upcoming Todd Phillips movie, Joker looks amazing. I’ll be honest, when the movie was announced, I had immediate apprehension. Joker has been done over and over and over and over again, each time offering a small glimpse, save for Heath Ledger, into his psyche. Every movie that has featured the iconic villain as its antagonist, has failed to do something very critical…explain who, how, what, and why he is. Instead, they all opt to pick up after he has become the Joker.
- Heath Ledger
- Caesar Romero
- Jack Nicholson
- Jared Leto
From the look of the trailer, Todd Phillips appears to have fixed that.
Finally…
Warner Bros. has finally dropped the Joker trailer and it looks….chilling. As I watched it for the first time, I felt the hairs stand on the back of my neck and goosebumps appear on my arms. At just over two minutes long, the trailer does what entire movies haven’t been able to do…give a reason for his existence. Seriously, in just two minutes I felt a connection to the character and actually started feeling pity. What makes this so remarkable is that of all the characters DC has at its disposal, Joker is the last character I should feel pity for.
When I heard that DC and Warner Bros. were making a Joker movie, I was a little worried. I was worried that it wouldn’t dig deep enough into what makes him, well, him. You know, what caused him to fall so badly from being a normal, family man to the psychotic archenemy of Batman. I wanted to see Alan Moore’s Killing Joke without actually seeing Alan Moore’s Killing Joke.
From what I can feel, I think we’ve got it.
The trailer confirms that the Joker movie won’t be another comic book movie. It won’t be everything that superheroes movies have become known for…over the top spectacle filled with more CGI than a video game. Instead, by the look of the trailer, Joker will be a psychological session and the audience will be the psychologist. And that’s a good thing. With no other superhero released around it, Joker will certainly have the world’s attention.
Joker is slated to hit theatres October 4, 2019. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
Cheers,
Joel
