The life of a superhero isn’t easy, and that’s why most superheroes in the MCU don’t have families. It is the same thing for Captain Marvel, who we know has been quite busy ever since becoming a superhero. Then again, while she may have been quite busy, we also know that the heart wants what it wants, and that could be the reason why Valkyrie made a cameo appearance in ‘The Marvels.’ So, are Captain Marvel and Valkyrie in love?
Valkyrie’s ‘The Marvels’ cameo explained
It goes without saying that cameos are now a thing in the world of the MCU, as several characters can make short appearances in different movies that aren’t necessarily about them. The same thing happened in ‘The Marvels’ despite the fact that this movie was always going to focus on the trio of Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan. There was an incredibly interesting cameo that fans gave meaning to.
During the earlier part of the movie, Dar-Benn went to a planet called Tarnax, which was home to the Skrull refugees under the leadership of Emperor Drogge. The point of her visit to that planet was to talk about a possible peace treaty between the Kree and the Skrulls, as the Kree Empire’s homeworld of Hala was now dying due to its lack of resources.
But Captain Marvel intervened after tracing mysterious jump points to Dar-Benn and the Kree Empire. She went to Tarnax, where she found herself meddling in the affairs of the Kree. Of course, she was constantly switching places with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, and this made it difficult for her to deal with Dar-Benn.
The moment Dar-Benn was able to escape from the trio of Marvels, she told the Skrulls that the peace treaty was now ineffective because the Skrulls seemingly sent the Annihilator (Carol Danvers) to kill her. Dar-Benn used the power of her Bangle to open a large jump point that sucked out all of the air from Tarnax, causing catastrophic damage to the planet. The Marvels needed to evacuate Emperor Drogge and the other Skrulls from that planet but were unable to save all of them.
On the ship, Drogge was seemingly displeased about the fact that Carol intervened in the peace talks. But Captain Marvel told Drogge that Dar-Benn was going to destroy the planet anyway and allow the Skrulls to die in the process of transferring the air from Tarnax to Hala. Still, Drogge was upset about the fact that he and the Skrulls no longer had a planet they could take refuge in.
Carol assured Drogge that she had called a friend who could help them. Monica was able to use her powers to sense that something was coming, and this happened to be the Bifrost Bridge, which is basically made out of light energy. While Thor has always been the one associated with the Bifrost because Stormbreaker is capable of summoning it at will, Valkyrie was the one who appeared.
Wearing a suit to give justice to her status as the king of Asgard, Valkyrie greeted Carol and allowed the Skrulls to return to New Asgard on Earth with her through the Bifrost. In that regard, it was clear that Carol and Valkyrie have been communicating with one another ever since the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ This made it easy for Captain Marvel to call on the help of the Asgardian king to allow the Skrulls to take refuge back on Earth.
Captain Marvel’s relationship status with Valkyrie
Of course, Valkyrie’s cameo appearance in ‘The Marvels’ allowed fans to speculate regarding the possible relationship between her and Captain Marvel. We know that she called Valkyrie a “friend,” but it is possible that there’s something more to this friendship than just platonic love and admiration.
Just before Valkyrie left Carol, she actually gave her a peck on the cheek. Of course, friends could give friends pecks on the cheek, especially if we’re talking about women who are incredibly close to one another. But let’s not forget that the sexual preferences of both Captain Marvel and Valkyrie have never been confirmed, as there are speculations that could lead to the possibility that they could actually be bisexual or lesbian. Even Tessa Thompson, the actress of Valkyrie, gave an interesting comment regarding her character’s relationship with Captain Marvel.
“I, you know, the heart wants what it wants. I don’t… I can’t speak yet to Val. She hasn’t had a ton of time to focus too squarely on her love life since she’s been besought with a lot of kingly duties,”
As you can see, not even Thompson actually confirmed that her character was straight. She gave vague answers regarding the sexual preference of Valkyrie. And this is why more and more fans are starting to wonder what could actually be between Carol and Valkyrie, especially after the cameo appearance in ‘The Marvels.’
Then again, it is more than possible that nothing is going on between Captain Marvel and Valkyrie and that they are simply close friends who went through a lot together, especially in the five years between the Snap and the Blip. But the events of ‘The Marvels’ still make it difficult to accept that everything is platonic between the two powerful and prominent heroines. Of course, we can’t even say anything about Carol’s sexual preferences because this has been vague as well.
In ‘The Marvels,’ it was revealed that Danvers was actually married to Prince Yan of Aladna due to a technicality that happened in the past when she was still living on that planet. Officially and politically, she was married to Yan.
But it was clear that Carol didn’t have any feelings toward the prince as she was even hesitant about going to Aladna when she found out that Dar-Benn was targeting this planet next. And this is despite the fact that the prince himself was handsome, charming, brave, and incredibly understanding.
So, if Carol didn’t fall for the prince of Aladna, the chances of her having a different sexual preference are now incredibly high. But, of course, it is also possible that romance just isn’t in the cards for Captain Marvel because she knows that the universe needs her more than ever.
