It’s been over four years since Brie Larson debuted as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her journey started in the original Captain Marvel movie in 2019, only two months before she played the role for the second time in Avengers: Endgame. After that, Larson reprised the role in two cameo appearances in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021 and the Ms. Marvel series in 2022.
This year, it’s time for the sequel to the original Captain Marvel movie, officially titled The Marvels, in which Brie Larson will reprise the role of Carol Danvers, and Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani will accompany her to form a new superhero team in the MCU. Parris debuted as Monica Rambeau in the WandaVision series in 2021, while Vellani debuted as Ms. Marvel in the homonymous mini-series on Disney+ last year. Now it’s time for these three powerful heroines to join forces together. Marvel Studios released the first teaser trailer today, and you can check it down below. Keep reading to see our trailer breakdown.
‘The Marvels’ Trailer Breakdown
Monica Rambeau now works with Nick Fury at the S.A.B.E.R. space station
Regarding the MCU timeline, we can’t be sure if this movie is chronologically happening before or after the Secret Invasion series events, which are set to premiere in June on Disney+. What is known, however, is that Samuel L. Jackson will reprise the role of Nick Fury in both of those projects.
The first scene in The Marvels trailer shows us Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury at the S.A.B.E.R. space station and Captain Monica Rambeau, who is now an astronaut. Fury and Monica had known each other for a long time, considering they met in the first Captain Marvel movie, which takes place in 1995, when Monica was still a kid. In WandaVision, we’ve met the adult Monica, who worked as an agent of S.W.O.R.D., and this movie will show us a superhero Monica who has the ability to manipulate energy after her encounter with Wanda Maximoff in Westview.
Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan somehow switch places
The ending of the Ms. Marvel series showed us the main character Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, using her powers, and after that, she immediately disappeared, and Carol Danvers somehow showed up in her place. This resulted in a theory that Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel’s powers are somehow connected, and they can switch places when they use their powers, no matter how far they are from each other.
The Marvels trailer now shows us that Monica’s powers are also entangled with Carol and Kamala’s. During the mission in outer space, Monica accidentally switches places with Kamala Khan, who is now suddenly in a spacesuit in outer space, looking at Nick Fury. Of course, not aware of the situation, Kamala is all excited, thinking this is some sort of a test to join the Avengers. Don’t worry, Kamala; you’ll get there when the right time comes.
Captain Marvel returns in a way she probably didn’t expect
Confused to see an unknown teenager in a space suit, Nick Fury wonders where Monica is now. Meanwhile, Monica winds up on some alien planet, while Carol Danvers suddenly shows up in Kamala’s room, which we have already seen at the end of the Ms. Marvel series. This means that a three-side switching happened; Kamala switched places with Monica, and Monica switched places with Carol. What is causing this entanglement is unknown. With no one having any idea what’s going on, it’s time for a new adventure and a new superhero team in the MCU.
Fury and Monica arrive at Kamala’s doorstep
Looking for the answers, Nick Fury and Monica arrive at Kamala’s house, which means another switching happened, resulting in Kamala winding back into her house and Monica back with Fury. However, in all the excitement to meet the former director of SHIELD, who was also one of the founders of the Avengers, Kamala demonstrates her powers, resulting in another switch with Captain Marvel.
Flerken returns
An orange cat-looking alien creature known as the Flerken, which have watched in the original Captain Marvel movie, will return in The Marvels. After trying to show her powers to Fury and Monica, Kamala switches places with Carol again. Carol accidentally drops on Kamala’s house again while Kamala winds up on an alien spaceship where Flerken accompanies her. And Flerken does what it does best, eats everyone who stands in its way.
Thankfully, it looks like the Flerken will remain friendly to Kamala as it was to Nick Fury in the original Captain Marvel movie. One brief scene later in the trailer teased that we could see more than one Flerken in this movie. Way more than one.
First look at Park Seo-Joon and Zawe Ashton
Zawe Ashton has been previously confirmed to play the movie’s main villain. Although the trailer didn’t reveal much about her role and motivations, it looks like Ashton will play one of the Kree Empire Accusers. We still remember Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser, who was defeated and killed by the Guardians of the Galaxy when he tried to conquer Xandar with the Power Stone. The first Captain Marvel movies later showed how Ronan had come across Captain Marvel before he decided to fall back when he realized she was too powerful.
Zawe Ashton will now play one of the other Accusers, and we can see her holding a hammer similar to the one Ronan had. Another character that was revealed was Park Seo-Joon’s unknown character. His role is unknown, but from what we have seen in the trailer, it seems he’ll be one of those sidekicks of the main villain.
Avengers, Guardians, Defenders… and now Marvels!
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced a ton of characters and several superhero teams in 15 years of its existence. We have witnessed the adventures of Avengers and Guardians on the big screen and Defenders on the small screen, and now it’s time for Marvels, the first all-female superhero team. This movie was initially announced as Captain Marvel 2 before it was officially renamed into The Marvels when it became clear this would be another team-up movie.
WandaVision and Ms. Marvel shows on Disney+ have introduced new characters, so this movie doesn’t need to bother with any introduction apart from the main villain. The trailer gave us a good glimpse at The Marvels fighting against Ashton’s main villain, and it looks like The Marvels will use this switching side effect of using their powers to gain the upper hand against the new Accuser. This promises a final battle unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the MCU, and we are all here for it.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels movie is set to be released on November 10, 2023.
