Ahead of its February 21st release, the movie released a new teaser and you can check it out below:
The movie has been called a dark, R-rated family film, which might sound odd but could actually be a fitting description. Theo James shared in interviews that Clear and producer Peter Safran had the rights to The Monkey and a script that wasn’t working.
Director Osgood Perkins came up with a new idea for the story, which impressed everyone, including the team behind The Conjuring films. Perkins explained his unique take, asking, “What if it’s a comedy?” He described the monkey as an evil force, not because it attacks like M3GAN, but because its presence alone leads to strange and deadly events, causing people to die in weird ways without any clear explanation.
Everybody dies whether there’s a monkey or not. What if you could do this with a smile — process the fact that everybody dies? And what an insane, surrealist notion, dude! You will die; we’ll all die. That’s crazy sh–. To do that as a comedy felt very apropos.”
James further added that fans of Stephen King adaptations can expect one “hyper-dark” and really funny movie.
He wanted to make a family movie, but an R-rated oneIt’s hyper dark, but also it has heart to it, and it’s really funny.
