The New Star Wars Trilogy Officially Announced, First Installment Set for 2025

George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise has become a cornerstone of modern science fiction. What began as an ambitious space opera has evolved into one of the most beloved and successful franchises in history. Over the decades, the Star Wars universe has expanded beyond the original films to include a variety of spin-offs, such as video games, TV series, books, and comics.

In line with this expansion, we can now confirm that a new Star Wars trilogy is officially in the works. Scheduled to debut on February 25, 2025, this trilogy will be a literary one, consisting of three new books.

The trilogy, titled Reign of the Empire, will explore the early years of the Rebellion’s rise against the Empire, starting in the immediate aftermath of the Empire’s establishment following the events of Revenge of the Sith.

The first novel in the trilogy, titled The Mask of Fear, is set to release on February 25, 2025, and will be written by Alexander Freed, known for his work on the Alphabet Squadron series. This installment will be a political thriller set in the early days of the Empire. Based on Freed’s previous work, we’re confident it will be a compelling read. Following this, there will be two more novels, with the first authored by Rebecca Roanhorse, known for Resistance Reborn, and the second by Fran Wilde, who will be making her debut in the Star Wars universe with this book.

In a statement to io9, Alexander Freed shared the following:

“I’m enormously excited to be a part of this project and explore an era of Star Wars especially rich with the nuanced stories of ‘ordinary’ citizens–people living inside the machinery of the Empire, still figuring out what’s happened to their government and in violent disagreement over ideas of democracy, resistance, revolution, and complicity. It’s a chance to write a political thriller and spy drama and sweeping historical epic all at once, as well as spotlight Mon Mothma–a character I’ve been passionate about for ages. I can only hope the end result does justice to the grand themes of the prequel films, and manages a similar blend of timelessness and relevance.”
