Matt Reeves’ latest expansion of Batman Epic Crime Saga has come to an end. Ever since the pilot episode aired ‘The Penguin’ has been called “the greatest” superhero show in recent years, and it had viewership numbers to match these claims.
According to SambaTV, the show has been at the top of the viewership charts for six weeks in a row, this is likely going to turn into seven weeks.
‘The Penguin’ finale drew 2.1 million U.S. viewers across HBO and Max, marking a new audience high. This is a 50% increase from its debut viewership, according to Warner Bros. Discovery, though premiere numbers were not disclosed.
Even though initial numbers weren’t shared with the public, Variety reported that the show attracted 5.3 million U.S. viewers across all platforms during the first week. Surpassing the final season premiere of ‘Succession’ (4.9 million) and the second season premiere of ‘The White Lotus’ (4.1 million).
It also achieved the largest 4-day audience for a new series on Max globally since ‘The Last of Us’ in January 2023.
Episode 7 of ‘The Penguin’ reached a series high with 1.9 million viewers, and Episode 1 has now accumulated 17 million U.S. viewers.
November 10 was the series’ biggest day on Max in the U.S., marking its best week both domestically and globally as viewers caught up before the finale. Globally, ‘The Penguin’ is the third most-watched HBO or Max debut season, behind ‘The House of the Dragon’ and ‘The Last of Us.’
If you’re wondering about the potential second season, at New York Comic Con (NYCC), ‘The Penguin’ showrunner Lauren LeFranc discussed what would be needed for the show to get a second season. She explained that for season two to happen, they need to feel they can “top themselves” and have more to explore with the characters.
Farrell also confirmed that he would be willing to return to the second season of the show, despite the prosthetics if the idea is good enough.
