Matt Reeves’ ‘Batman Epic Crime Saga’ keeps expanding, and the latest installment is currently airing, a show focusing on Oz Cobb’s rise to power following the death of Carmine Falcone in ‘The Batman: Part I.’

Fans were initially skeptical that The Penguin was getting his own standalone show, all such doubts were dismissed after the first episode aired.

Fans immediately started praising pretty much every aspect of the show, from its grounded and gloomy setting to performances delivered by Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. The show is set to air its last episode in a few days during which we will finally see The Penguin either at the top of Gotham’s food chain or completely defeated by Sofia Gigante.

Now since the show is ending, fans naturally started wondering regarding the potential second season of the show. Certainly, Reeves’ Oz is interesting enough and there’s plenty of room to expand either his origin or his criminal pursuits. The showrunner Lauren LeFranc recently addressed that potential second season, and quite frankly it’s going to be tough to deliver what they want to deliver.

At New York Comic Con (NYCC), ‘The Penguin’ showrunner Lauren LeFranc discussed what would be needed for the show to get a second season. She explained that for season two to happen, they need to feel they can “top themselves” and have more to explore with the characters.

LeFranc emphasized her care for the characters, even though they are flawed, and expressed a desire to continue playing in the “fun sandbox” of Gotham City, but only if the right story is there—emphasizing that they wouldn’t continue just for the sake of it.

I mean, we put it all out on the table. I think that in order to do a second season, we have to feel like we can top ourselves. We have to feel like there’s something more there to really dig into. I mean, I really care about all these characters, even if they’re terrible people.

It’s been a joy to write them, even though they’re twisted and complicated and weird and darkly funny. So look, I think Gotham City is just such a fun sandbox to play, and I’d love to keep playing in it, but I think it just has to be the right thing. We should never do anything just to do it.

LeFranc also addressed additional challenges of creating a second season, especially the taxing process of Colin Farrell’s prosthetics to play the title character. She praised Farrell for his positive attitude throughout the process, despite the difficulties.

She also expressed excitement over the positive reception of the show, highlighting how fans connect emotionally to the characters, appreciate the mix of humor and dark tones, and embrace the unique portrayals of characters like Oz, Victor, Francis, and Sophia.

I know, and you know, it’s a taxing thing. It’s crazy. What he went through also, by the way, though he had the best attitude I know he publicly, is like, ‘Oh, I was done with it.’ I’m like, he was a joy. And I mean that so sincerely because I don’t have to say that, but it’s deeply true. And you could ask anyone on our crew, and they would say the same thing. So he’s the best.

We might never get a second season of ‘The Penguin,’ but recently Reeves and LeFranc hinted that other spinoffs are potentially in the works. What do you think? Should ‘The Penguin’ get a second season?
