The Reckoning Begins: ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Reveals Final Season Release Date and First-Look Photos
Few Taylor Sheridan shows wear their bleakness as proudly as ‘Mayor of Kingstown.’ Set in a fictional Michigan town where incarceration is the only thriving industry, it follows the McLusky family as they act as mediators between gangs, prisoners, guards, cops and politicians. Mike McLusky, played by Jeremy Renner, took over as the town’s unofficial mayor after his brother Mitch died in the very first episode.
The series debuted on Paramount+ in November 2021, and its seasons have arrived on famously scattered timelines. Season 2 premiered in January 2023, Season 3 in June 2024 and Season 4 in October 2025, ending with a finale on December 28 that left Kingstown soaked in blood. Just over a week later, Paramount+ confirmed that the fifth season would be the last.
Now fans finally know when the final chapter arrives. Paramount+ has announced that the fifth and final season of ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ will premiere on Friday, January 15, 2027, and the streamer has released a batch of first-look photos to go with the date.

The last season will be shorter than the rest. It will consist of 8 episodes instead of the usual 10, and the show is wrapping up earlier than its creators once planned. Sheridan and co-creator Hugh Dillon had previously described a seven-season vision for the story, so five seasons feels like a premature goodbye for many viewers.
The decision comes with some context. Reports have noted that the show, while a solid hit, is an expensive streaming series that never reached the record-breaking viewership of Sheridan’s biggest titles. Even so, it earned more critical acclaim as it went along, and the last season is said to have scored 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The images hint at a lot of collisions ahead. They show Renner’s Mike with Necar Zadegan’s Evelyn, Laura Benanti’s Cindy Stephens and Dillon’s Ian, along with a shot of Lennie James as Frank Moses, who does not look happy about being behind bars. There are also pictures of Taylor Handley as Kyle and Edie Falco as the prison warden, Nina Hobbs.
The story picks up directly from the Season 4 finale, in which Kyle took revenge on Merle Callahan (Richard Brake) for the murder of his wife, Tracy, in a brutal fashion. According to the official synopsis, FBI agent Russell Hardy, played by David Morse, arrives in Kingstown searching for the ‘fugitive’ Callahan. A true lawman, he threatens to unearth all of Mike’s sins and secrets and disrupt the town’s tenuous balance of power.
Along with Renner and Falco, the final season brings back Handley, Dillon, Tobi Bamtefa as Bunny Washington, Derek Webster as Stevie, Zadegan, Benanti, James and Nichole Galicia. Morse joins as a new series regular, and Nestor Carbonell has been added as Enrique Molina, a boss who comes to Kingstown to avenge a missing relative.
Behind the scenes, Dave Erickson returns as showrunner, with Sheridan, Dillon, Renner and Antoine Fuqua among the executive producers. Sheridan also directed the series pilot. Production on the season wrapped in early July.

If you need a refresher before January, the first four seasons are available on Paramount+ and Netflix. The streamer’s pattern suggests the final season will take a while to reach Netflix, since earlier seasons arrived there about 10 months after their Paramount+ debut.
That leaves a few months to revisit Mike’s journey and brace for what could be a bleak but fitting ending. Whether the final season offers a way out of Kingstown or proves that the town never lets anyone go, the countdown to the finale has officially begun.
What do you predict for Mike McLusky in the final season?
